Canopus ADVC110 Hello, can the Canopus ADVC110 be used as a Webcam? In other words, can i plug a regular video camera using the RCA composite video output of the camera into the composite video input of the Canopus ADVC110 and then have it be recognized by my computer as a webcam for live video streaming?

Yes you can. I have that very same setup using a surveilance cam as my webcam =)
Yawcam is a pretty good allround webcam application with lots of features, I recommend it!

Can I use the Canopus Twin Pact 100 to transfer vider from digital video camera to computer? The firewire port on the camera is no longer working, so I need another way to transfer the video to the...

No, it isn't really the right tool for the job.

The Canopus is for converting analog video signals to digital (like capturing the video from your computer monitor as you move the mouse around).

You already have a digital video source (your digital video camera). So this box won't accept that as input.

If your video camera has other output ports, like component video (see below for a picture), then it might work. The Canopus will accept analog RCA for input.

How do I take video tapes media from a sony handycam ccdtrv81 and load it into imovie to make a montage with my own old home movies?

Hi Vicki
You are not going to do it without spending some money.
Look on ebay for something like a Canopus ADVC110. It's good quality (sorry - excellent quality) unit powered from your Firewire socket. It does Analogue-Digital conversion both ways. Into iMovie and then back out to your camera. in fact iMovie sees it as your camera. You can find cheaper kit but the picture quality is not as good. There is a more expensive version that has video noise reduction built in but it's best use is for removing noise from VHS tapes when importing to iMovie.
There are several on ebay in the UK right now. Canopus is now called Grass Valley - one of the biggest manufacturers in the broadcast TV world.

Need adaptor for older Sony analog camcorder - CCD-TRV70 DC 6V

You need to get a Digital to Analogue converter such as the Canopus ADVC110 A/D Converter. (circa $225). There may be cheaper alternatives. (you might also be able to use a digital camcorder that has a built in Analogue to digital converter):
 Canopus 77010150100 ADVC110 Converter

The Canopus comes with a 6-pin firewire cable. Since your Dell Studio has a 4 pin Firewire (actually called iLink) you will also need a 6-pin to 4-pin cable or an adapter:
 Firewire 6-PIN To 4-PIN Cable

 Cables To Go - 27028 - Firewire 6-Pin Female 4-Pin Male Adapter

You hook your Sony up to the A/D converter with audio and video cables (usually supplied with your camcorder) and hook the converter to you Dell with a firewire cable. Then you capture the video using some video capture software. I don't know what comes with windows these days.

Cant capture video

Not having camcorder control is normal, as the ADVC110 doesn't translate DV (AV/C) control to anything else. It just accepts and replies to deck control commands so the capture application doesn't get stuck waiting for a response.

First off, make sure you only have the ADVC110, your VCR, and your computer connected. No other Firewire devices.

Be sure your have the output from your VCR connected to the ADVC's input. Connect your VCR's output to your TV. You should see in iMovie the same image you see on your TV, slightly delayed.

ADVC110 - not recognised by computer

If you're using the AC adapter, try it without (using a 6-pin to 6-pin Firewire cable) the AC adapter.

Otherwise try a different Firewire cable.

PAL Problem and ADVC110

It's difficult to tell what's really going on by looking at the PC monitor. You should generate a DV file and play it back through the ADVC to a TV and see.

The issue is interlacing. Since the two fields of interlaced video are originated at different points in time, when you play both fields on a non-interlaced display like a PC monitor, you see the two combined and they don't match up. So you get half of a ball before the line, and half of the ball after the line and it looks funny.

Does the audio play back OK on the computer? Sounds like the audio level is incorrect.

Make sure you connect the audio output to a Line input, not a Headphone or Phono input.
