Hi Jessica,
Much to your chagrin I bet, there's not too many options besides "play it less" if you want to cool your new iPad down. If the heat is an issue for you now it is probably going to continue to be an issue for you later.
Having said that, there are a couple ways I have used that seems to cool down the iPad by a few degrees:
- Turn down your screen brightness. This is the best way for you to avoid heating issues. Your new iPad probably came out of the box with brightness turned all the way up. If you turn that down you will notice a decrease in heat immediately.
- Use Wi-Fi instead of 4G LTE whenever possible. Now obviously you can't do this everywhere, but whenever possible you should access the internet via Wi-Fi and avoid riding your 4G LTE chip. That baby is power hungry and will heat up quick.
- Give your A5X chip a break. In less technical terms, try not to play graphics heavy games (like Infinity Blade) for an extended period of time. Like you said in your question, that's when you experience the most heat discomfort. If it is at all possible for you to take even a short break (like 10 minutes every hour) from gaming, it should do a lot to keep the heat down.
I hope that helps you out!
