Hi Megan,

I appreciate you adding me to your list of contacts and asking me to help you with your problem.

However, I don't know if I can be much help from here. Noises can be very difficult to diagnose when you actually have the vehicle in front of you. All I can tell you for sure is that the noise you are hearing is not normal and if it happens only when you apply the brakes, then it is most definately brake-related. I have had some vehicles making noised as you described because of broken brake hardware. I have had some with similar customer complaints that have had loose or missing caliper mounting pins. Then I have had some that the problem was not the brakes at all, but rather lower control arm bushings that were coming apart and applying the brake was making the entire front suspension shift and make a loud popping noise.
My professional advice is to take it by a professional auto repair shop and have one of the technicians drive the vehicle. They may be able to give you some idea of what is going on just by hearing and/or "feeling" the noise themseves. Then again, they may tell you that the wheels need to be removed for a full brake and suspension inspection before they can tell you anything.

I wish I had a more "cut-and-dry" answer for you, but I am afraid that is pretty much impossible at this point.

Good luck,

Dave (dttech)

Well, I don't mean to state the obvious, but if you are scared of it and you think the vehicle may not be safe to drive, that is what tow trucks were made for.

If you do not have AAA, it would be a good idea to subscribe to it. I am a professional mechanic and I subsribe to AAA for both myself and for my wife's car. I can get a tow for up to 200 miles for FREE. For both my wife and myself, we are paying only $69 (US) per year.....They even bailed me out when I was on vacation and I broke a key off in the ignition. They sent a locksmith who repaired my ignition lock and made two new keys at no cost to me....well worth the anual fee!

Not enough information to answer. Need manufacturer, year, model, and engine size in order to answer the question.

Hello i have a 2001 sunfire. everytime i put on my breaks i have a really loud popping sound. at first i when i heard it i was like wow. like i hit something. but then it kept doing it. its scary.

Noises are hard to repair without actually driving the vehicle myself. If it sounds really bad and and you don`t think it is safe. The best thing to do is to take it to a repair shop and have it looked at.It might not be safe to drive. You could have an accident or get stranded.Could be something lose in the front or rear suspension.Depending on where then sound is coming from. The front or the rear. When at the repair shop make sure they show you the problem and not just tell you it is one thing and then when you get the car back it is still making the noise.A good repair shop should be more than happy to show you the problem.Hope this helps.Good luck.

I started my car and heard a loud pop now a trac off light and my check engine light is on. I know i am about due for a tune up but the engine is shaking and making a loud noise.

sounds like eithor you blew a cylinder or a head gasket might have been a spark plug blow out
look under your hood when the car is running you will see the problem if it is one of theise

other wise 1 plug might have craped and the raw fuel was dumped down the exhaust and you got a backfire

My car has been running fine, until i cranked it up this morning and it made a loud pop, the trac off light came on, the brakes are hard to pump and it is idleing really high and it wants to take off on...

With the brake problem and the Tract control issue I start looking for a vacum problem. Brakes being hard to pump tells me your not getting the assist form your Power brake unit which gets power from vacum. It really sounds like you need to have a Mechanic look into these problems. At the very least, get a Haynes repair manual for your vehicle from the Auto Parts store to get trouble shooting instructions.

My solution would be to use a hammer or some likewise tool and tap on the side of the drum to knock the break dust and free the pads, then slightly tap on the end of the stud. Which should free the drums. Hope this was helpful, please rate. Thanks
