The three components that can cause this problem are:

1. Thermo couple
2. Heater element and
3. heating timer.

You can try bypassing the thermocouple that is wrapped around the end of the cooling coils. The system will work but will be heating and cooling according to the time built in control timer (usually 8 h cooling and 30 min heating). This way you can find out if your heater element is still working. If yes, them simply change the thermocouple.

sounds like a thermistor problem. since you did not provide a model #, i am not sure how many thermistors and thermostats there are but most freezers have at least 1. i would recommend having it replaced.
