While kneading dough, the mixer stopped turning. the problem is that the bevel gear separated from the worm follower gear. i took it apart and tapped the two together again, replaced retaining clip and crossed my fingers, but after four or five minutes of kneading dough, it happened again. i will order new gears and retaining clip but am not too sure what the problem is. i assume that the bevel and follower gears should be a very tight fit or is the retaining clip supposed to stop the two from separating

SOURCE: The head to my kitchen aid mixer bounces up when kneading dough
Yes! It's the "beater to bowl adjustment" trick. I got the KA shipped to my house yesterday and today is the first time to use it. Well, while making the dough, the locking position keeping switching to the unlocking position plus the bouncing beater head looked very scary.
All I did is follow the guide of the "beater to bowl adjustment'. There is a screw right underneath the middle of the beater head. Turning the screw clock-wise makes the beater head lower so the locking knob can be turned further toward the "Lock" position. I let it keep stirring the dough for long enough like15 minutes and never got unlocked this time.
Thanks, QuiteRoit!

Don't worry about the Worm Gear for now. You have to make sure that the Motor
is fully functional by itself: Remove the Transmission Housing Cover (4 screws) and
the two screws holding the Motor down. Lift the Motor off the Worm Gear and set it
on the side (be careful of AC voltages from the Motor and Control Assembly).
Select Stir setting and observe the motor shaft. Is the Motor running? If it is,
Select other speeds to see how the motor performs.
With the motor now fully functional, you can now check the Worm Gear Follower
for worn out/broken teeth. Remember the motor drives the Worm Gear, it then in
turn drives the Worm Gear Follower (you may have to remove the grease to see it)
The Bevel Gear sits right on top of the Follower and drives the Attachment Gear.
