I have the same problem. In addition to the 4" vertical black strip on left 1/3 of screen, there is also a 4" vertical stripe running down the center of the screen (half is black, half is white). Any suggestions?I have the same problem. While watching TV, a 4" black vertical strip appeared in the center of the screen. I turned the TV off and then back on after a few minutes and the strip was still there. We originally had a red stripe roughly 3" wide running vertically on the ride edge area of our Panasonic 52" Viera plasma tv. It has now been joined by a solid black stripe of the same width running from the top to the bottom. Living in Germany and purchased at local PX long enough ago that the warranty is likely expired. Now what?
Bad connection somewhere along the bottom or top of the panel, there are boards most likely along the bottom of the screen that control vertical drawing, a connection that breaks as it is heated up sounds about right. check the connectors along the bottom. Be very careful because if you wreck em the screen is junk. The connector that will be at fault will be in direct line with the black bar.
Hi
If there is no picture behind the stripe and the edges are well-defined, then one of the display driver ICs has failed. Philips displays can be made by several manufacturers - usually Samsung. The ICs are bonded to the flexible ribbon in most cases, and replacement is an expensive specialist job - and in many cases is simply not possible.
A shadow on the picture is much better - usually due to interference.

Ok did this happen the first time u turn on the TV. ? If so u might have a ribbon cable disconnect from the logic or u might have a defective Plasma panel. If u have a defect like your describing the IC's on the panel short out and no longer work causing that section of the screen not to function. Only fix then is replace panel
