I have a Maytag MDG9606AWW gas dryer. The heat is intermittent. What part is most likely to need replacing?

Some times the heat will start and stay. Some times the heat will start and go away while still tumbling. Sometimes the heat will not start at all.

I replaced the igniter. Same issue. I took all removable sensors etc to the local appliance store. The tech said they tested good. (continuity only I'm assuming). To best describe the issue is the igniter glows, flame kicks on after 5 seconds of glowing. Then between 5 to 10 seconds the flame kicks off abrubtly. Restarting the dryer will repeat the above symptoms. Same results wether on timed dry or moister sensing. I held a damp cloth to the moister sensor while testing and same issue.Venting looks good.I guess I can call a tech out but I can purchase a good condition dryer for less then $100 on craigs list.So I'm trying to determine if I do that or put more time and $ into this one. I just paid $33 for the igniter. I know parts are cheaper on line but I have six kids and need this thing up and running asap so I paid the mark up price to avoid waiting several days for shipping. Thanks for any info. Also my volt meter is toast so I can't self test parts right now unless I run them down to the store.

Although it could be several things, the three most likely suspects is the radiant sensor P/N 338906, the thermostat P/N 303395 if there is a temperature fluctuation but the burner is active. The gas valve P/N 306176 if the burner is not active. Intermittent problems are very hard to troubleshoot so you need to write down every indication and when it happens. For example: Works good on permanet press, but not on high.

Hope this helps. Hal aka ImJustAvg

From what you just said, we can rule out the gas valve. I would still suspect the thermostat or radiant sensor and since both are across from each other on the combustion cone, you could take them both off and have them tested. If either is shorted it would cause that problem.

I HAVE A MAYTAG GAS DRYER MODEL MDG9606AWW. THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT STARTS ,FIRES UPAND HEATS FOR A FEW MIN. THEN IS DOES NOT HEAT ANY MORE. I JUMPED OUT THE THERMOSTATE ON THE EXHAUST BUT IT DID THE SAME...

Hello,

The reason your gas heated dryer starts off heating ok,but a part way through the cycle it is no longer heating as it did when it started,is beacuse the coils that open the gas valve are getting hot and breaking down when they are warm. At start up of cycle the coils are cool, but when the dryer heats up as it runs the coils that are weak can not handle the heat and do not open the gas valve. Replacing the gas valve coils with fresh, strong ones will open the gas valve the entire duration of the drying cycle. All appliance manufactures use the same exact gas valve coils and label them with their unique part number. Having been in the service business i know they are all the same and the part number for the least expensive gas valve coils is 279834
They can be purchased at your local appliance parts store on online at
searspartsdirect.com
repairclinic.com
apwagner.com
apdepot.com
midwestapplianceparts.com

To replace the coils, remove bracket over them(dont worry about where it says dont grip thats for when dryer is plugged in) unplug them and install new ones, that bracket has notches in it and the coils have tabs that inter lock so they position them self exactly where they fit.

This is what the coils looks like

Maytag dryer model mdg9606aww , no heat gas is flowing, could it be a thermostat?

There's a flame sensor near the igniter. If it's defective, the gas may shut off prematurely. Another common problem occurs when one of the electrical coils on the gas valve fails intermittently. If this happens, the flame shuts off before the thermostat sends a signal, which can greatly prolong the drying time. If the sensor or the coils are causing the flame to shut off, replace them.

if this helps please vote me a fix ya
