My mixer is 23 years old and was still working well, although it wasn't as powerful as it used to be. So I took off the back cover to remove some of the dust. I used a dry toothbrush and a can of air. I put the cover back on and now it won't start. I also removed the brushes but put them back in (didn't do anything w/them, and they only go back in one way). I took the cover back off to check the wires. All wires are connect and none appear to be burned out. I was also using a wash cloth to generally clean the mixer. It's possible a couple drops of water got inside. Did I ruin the board? Any advice? Is it worth sending it in for repair? I can get a new one from Sears today for about $200. I'm not sure how much it would cost to repair. Thanks for any help.
Just recheck that you really have put the brushes back in the right way, use a torch and look in the hole. The brushes can each go in 4 ways, only one of which will work. Look for the blocker and line it up with the cut off corner on the brush. It's normally at the back, one side at the top the other at the bottom. After that you need to be looking at everything you have done for a booboo. I doubt it will be water ingress. Make sure the switch contacts come together when the lever moves to position 1.

I'd check the brushes. The big black screws on the side of the motor casing, easily removed, but becareful when you put them back. Here were some instructions from another site that helped me get them back in right:
The brushes in my model KP50PSBU must be insert in a particular manner in order for it to work correctly. If you remove the brushes and shine a flashlight into the hole, you should see a small detent or "stop" in one corner of the hole. Its a square hole. Match this corner with the corner of the brush which is shaved off. The brush is not square; it has one corner shaved or smoothed down. This allows the brush to fully extend into the hole. If the brush is inserted any other way, it will not contact the motor and will not run.

Hi. Goto www.kitchenaid.com and do a search for your model#. Look for the manuals tab, locate and download the parts list for your mixer. These drawings will assist you with disassembly and reassembly. Remove the Planetary assembly by driving out the single pin that holds it to the mainshaft. Clean and regrease it too.
Over time the grease in your mixer will begin to separate into oil and harder grease base. It's time to remove as much of the oil and grease as possible, and then regrease.
To extend the life of your grease, run your mixer for a few minutes every week to keep the oil suspended in the grease. If not used for a long time, the oil will seprate.
I recommend using Chevron FM ALC EP-2 food grade grease, and after 5 years or so when it begins to drip, if you get a few drops in your bowl it won't matter much, in comparison with a petroleum grease that you shouldn't eat at any time.
Goto www.mendingshed.com and find their free Kitchenaid Service Manual and download it. This manual covers your mixer.
Regreasing your mixer isn't difficult, it is however, very messy to clean and regrease, so keep plenty of paper towels, rags, etc. handy. Latex or rubber gloves will help.

There may be a few solutions to you problem. it could be that the carbon brushes located at the left and right of the unit are either gone or improperly seated, as they will only work one way. part number for the brushes is 9706416 after checking these and if they are okay. i would check the board to see if there was any bending atall during the cleaning. there is a metal arm that the white actuator slides into on your board. if this metal arm has been bent even by a 1/4 inch or more it wont make contact and your unit will not operate.hope this helps
Thanks

Hi TRADESGIRLS, you are correct, the brushes have to seat correctly on the armature’s commutator or you won’t get any ‘juice. Unfortunately, the ‘screws’ on the sides of the mixer are just the Brush Holder Caps (brush cover), which allow you access to the brush holder assembly and has nothing to do with ‘adjusting’ the brushes. From what done already, still I suspect that one or both of the brushes is (are) not seated properly.
The brushes need to be installed so that they both seat correctly on the armature's commutator. See the illustration below:
I'd suggest removing them again and making sure the concave contact face rests completely on the armature’s commutator. If you've turned it 90 degrees too much, it won’t seat properly and you get no power to the motor.
It would also be helpful to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use K45SSW, and select the first file K45SSWH0.pdf (341.41 KB) listed under Parts List (1) and then check to verify this matches your mixer model.
Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled “Motor And Control Parts”, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer’s electrical components, along with all the parts. Locate Illus No 32, Brush holder assembly that includes Illus. Nos. #18, 21, 22, 23 & 31, and Illus. No. 19, Brush & Spring assembly respectively.
The Parts List illustration along with the picture above regarding the orientation of the brushes should get your mixer powered back up and operational. Good luck! I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA
