All of a sudden my tv started going nuts. It cycles through channels and when it finally stops, the volume goes through the roof. I have no control with the remote and the buttons on the tv work but don't get it to stop. Unless I hold the volume down button in, then the channel stops changing until I let go. Any ideas? I have the exact same problem (without the volume issue). The remote is perfectly fine as it will work with another RCA tv we have. The channels continue to search and the only way I can get it to stop is by pressing and holding the - volume on the front the tv. I can bring the menu up by pressing the - volume button and then pressing menu, but I can't scroll through the menu. I think this does have something to do with some sort of lock feature as it popped up momentarily before this all started.
The model of my tv is a RCA 20" TruFlat 20F420T
This is the same type of problem happening with other rca models and I know it is the EPROM CHIP but why this is failing is either because of design flaw , dirty enviroment that they were made in , to much voltage or current to the chip or too much of a draw from the chip causing it to fail . Or even a random frequency from the IR sensor or its circut I'm still investigating and testing.
leave the tv unplugged for at least 3 weeks durring this time resolder any solder that don't look good , I did this and it lasted for about 6 months(always plugged in to the wall) before it started doing it again. model # 27v412t
I know this sounds ridiculous, but my 20F420T did the same thing. TV went on and off at will, and when it was on, the channels changed automatically and wouldn't stop. The remote did nothing.
What I did was to fiddle around with the volume, channel and menu switches on the TV(not the remote) until the channels quit changing. It only took a minute and now it works fine. The remote works fine also. However, this happened six months ago and I thought the TV was infected with bed bugs and took it apart and found no problems.
I think it was just accidental that the fiddling with the volumn, channel and menu on the TV made it work. I wish I could say what the sequence was but I can't. I disconnected my TV from the wall socket, plugged it back in, and hit the channel on the TV and the channels started changing automatically. Then, like the person on this site suggested, I hit the volume switches and the rolling of the channels stopped as long as I kept holding down the volume button on the TV. Then, for some reason, I hit the menu button on the TV and it started working fine. I did nothing on the menu, just pressed the button on the TV.
I wish I could be on more help, but my TV works fine now and if it goes bonkers again, I'm going to do the same thing - hit the volume on the TV until the channels stop then hit the menu button on the TV.
I have this ALMOST solved. I have an RCA model #MZADG20743. I started playing with the wires that are connecting the channel buttons on the front of the tv with the circuit board. I turned on the TV and completely removed the wiring cluster (at the circuit board) that comes from those buttons and the channels stopped cycling. Unfortunately that is also where the remote sensor is connected, otherwise I would just leave it disconnected and use the remote.
So I reconnected the wiring to the circuit board and took an educated guess as to which wire would be the channel controller and severed it. At first I thought I screwed up because the TV didn't turn on but when I reconnected the wire, the TV turned on but the channels were still cycling. Leaving the TV on I disconnected the same wire and it stopped the cycling!
The remote works for all functions and turns the TV off, but it cannot turn the TV back on unless that wire is connected again... arghhh
Does anyone know wiring enough to give me advice on how to connect this wire so that it will bypass the faulty switch and still allow the on/off function to work?

I have the same problem with the same T.V. and I have only used the T.V. for roughly 40 hours as I just bought it to watch some NHL playoff games last year and unplugged it till this year and I watched a total of three and one half games and it went nuts shutting itself off and turning on and would not stop until I unplugged it. I turned the T.V. on the next day and it started going through the channels.
this all happened ONE WEEK after the warranty (one year warranty) had expired and only because it is a year since last years playoffs.
RCA told me they would exchange it for $90.00, I paid $100.00 for it on sale. I WILL NEVER BUY RCA JUNK AGAIN,

the "IR" sensor , EPROM ( IC101 ) , R033( 1k ohms ) , R102( 150 ohms ) , and crystal ( X001 ) , buttons should also be checked for a connection leak

also resolder heated components and or dried looking solder joints
RCA has always made some good products and some that ended up being bad because of IC chips or other parts that are made in other countrys and are not made in a completely clean environment , thus leading "any product" using that component to failure and repair
