I want to burn a karaeoke disc

The Karaoke Anywhere app will play standard MP3+G zip files. These contain two files. One must be an mp3 file and the other must be the accompanying cdg file. The zip file cannot contain any other files or folders.
It seems from what you describe, the file you are attempting to play through Karaoke Anywhere is an MP3 file but that it either does not have a proper CDG file, or the MP3+G zip file is not in the proper format.

My older CD player accepted WAV files when I burned them as Audio CDs. (I was able to add CD-Text, even though my player can't read the text. The disc I added space between the tracks though didn't work properly.)

Then do a mastered burn (disc at once) and finalize the disc. I used CD Burner XP for burning the latest batch and Audacity to create the WAV files. I've also use Roxio Creator and Nero in the past.

This isn't particularly uncommon on the hardware or software side. Some brands just don't particularly play with all formats on all speeds of media or all software and yes, sometimes it will burn but not play back. You can try to update your drivers but there's no guarantee that will work, but it's one of the few alternatives you have. If the recording speed and playback is that much of a concern, consider getting a new one from a different manufacturer.
You didn't mention what version of Nero you are using nor did you mention your Operating System is. These are important factors to consider as well. I had the full version of Nero 6 and I tried to run it on my Vista SP2 system. It didn't like it at all so now I just use the OEM version that came with burner when I bought the computer in 2009. You might want to try another burning software just to see if there's a difference.

I assume you know that you MUST use special Karaoke disks to have lyrics displayed... Ordinary music CD's do not have that data on them.

You need microsoft.NET framework from windows update withmp3+gtoolz you can convert your mp3 and cdg files into a bin file youthen need a program called cdrwin you get it from www.goldenhawk.comits not expensive but its free to copy at 1X speed you then have to runcdrwin select everything to cdg then load you bin files and record yourtracks you must have a cdg compatible burner but it will let you knowif you haven't.

Try burning at a lower speed like 24x. Burning too fast is the cause of the skips, because the data cannot be transferred at a steady pace.
