Instillation problem i recently purchased a 500GB version of the My Book for me to used on my XP, the problem is when i try to use the auto-run function to install it, it comes up with this message saying "To run this program, version 9 or greater of the Flash ActiveX control is needed. You can download if you point your IE browser or http://www.macromedia.com/software/flashplayer or click Yes to install it automatically?" But i already have the latest flash so i click yes, it opens up flash but on a blank screen which i cant do anything with (blank/empty file). How do i install the hard-drive? will it work on XP? is there something I'm missing?

Try using a different browser, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla SeaMonkey (super-fast), Opera, Google Chrome. I believe that IE now blocks Flash, by default because of the many vulnerabilities within Flash

SOURCE: Instillation problem

Close everything and try this....

<Start>
<settings>
<Control Panel>
<Administrative Tools>
<Computer Management>
<Disk Management>

Once you get there, your drives should list out along with their capacities and drive letters.

See if the MyBook shows up and if it does, it most likely just needs to have a drive letter assigned to it. Do that, click ok and reboot your machine.

I have about 4TBs of MyBooks sitting on my desk. Some of them I've had to manually install. Some of them just auto install.

Don't trust these things as "sole" back-ups though. They're not very reliable and Western Digital will make no efforts to recover lost data on your drive should it crash....

Good luck. Hope this helped you..

I have purchased a Seagate free agent Goflex 500gb I want to run it with my Mac Pro note book it dose not work

For a MAC to use an external Hard drive, the hard drive has to be formatted FAT32 file system. That is the only file system MAC sees.

I got anew computer with windows 7 and I would like to use my wd mybook 500gb how do i get this to work my book is compatillite with windows vista/xp/2000

External Hard drives are not designed to an operating system version, they will work with any windows system. The only difference is between MAC and windows.

Remember windows 7 is designed for people who don't know anything about computers, so they can just use it without knowing anything.

So windows 7 will work with anything more then vista will.

Don't worry it will work fine with win 7.

My hardisk 1tb only shows 500gb space, just bough it yessterday and i have installed it in port 0 and an other hardisk off 500 gb was installed on port 1 and when i go into my computer i only see both...

If you're using the original XP version it wasn't able to format the correct size of the hard drives. You need to find a version with Service Pack 2 and boot off that CD in order to format the correct size of the drives. You could also boot off a Vista installation CD and format the correct size.

LaCie 2d 500GB isnt recognized

Has the drive been formatted? Before using a hdd it has to be formatted. In Windows XP you have choices of FAT 32 or NTFS format. Hope this helps.

Seagate freedesktop agent 500gb, not detected on windows xp

I am facing the same same problem with my freeagent 750. It work some time, but most of the time it shows u in My Computer, but cannot enter. Couple of time if you run "chkdsk <Drive Letter>:/R" re-scans the entire hard disk and then it shows up. But that too stopped working now :-) Still hanging around for a resolution.
