Hi,
I have (correctly) installed the printer with the drivers provided by Zebra but the printer icon stays greyed out.
I can only print using "Test Print" on CAL.
Am I doing something wrong?
If you are using CAL (Create A Label) you must have a device called a "Dongle" plugged into your parallel (or USB) port. This acts as the activation key for CAL. If there is no dongle then CAL only works in demo mode. That's why printer Icon stays grayed out. The "Dongle" normally plugs directly into the parallel port and one end of the parallel lead plugs into the "Dongle" while the other plugs into your printer.
I would suggest that you download "Zebra Designer" software from the Zebra Website..This will work without any activation.
If you use ZD you must use the correct ZDesigner driver. (Install automatically as part of ZD setup) This driver only works with ZD.
If you need to link to a database then you will have to BUY label software. Zebra Designer Pro, or Nicelabel, or Bartender....etc.
Printer icon grayed out indicates that software is running in demo mode. Cal uses a device called a dongle which plugs into a PC Port (USB or Parallel) Check to see if you have dongle plugged in. Dongle acts as an activation key.
Create a Label is running in demo mode. (Greyed out).
Create A Label is looking for a DONGLE, a piece of hardware that plugs into the printer port and acts as a license key to unlock (changes grey status to black)your copy of Create A Label.
For most simple label designs you should download a copy of ZebraDesigner (Free) from zebra and just redesign your labels.

Try reseting the auto gap detection.

possibly not a real LP2844 but an LP2543, a printer mass produced for and used by UPS. refurbishers change the label and sell as LP2844 because they are almost identical.
if it has an AC-AC adapter, it is an LP2543. LP2844 uses a AC-DC adapter, and all LP2844's have USB ports.

Unplug the printer, place your finger on the green button and with the other hand turn the printer back on. Let the light flash four times (flash, flash flash, flash flash flash, flash flash flash flash) then immediately release the green button. The printer will cycle and feed out a couple of labels. Press the green button one more time and you are ready to go.

Are you sure that the page size is wrong, or are you just guessing because of the way that the label is printing? I would uninstall the driver - delete the printer from printers and faxes and remove the driver from Server Properties (in the file drop down in Printers and Faxes). Go to ups.zebra.com/ctp and get the latest driver - you have to have the UPS version of the driver in order to support pass-through printing. Go into your UPS Ship Asst application and make sure that the generic thermal is not checked.

Hi Brian,
When the last label printed is still under the printhead, that means the printer is in "rewind mode". There should be an option for "tear off" mode in the printer driver. This is the mode that pushes the last label printed out to the tear bar. The printer will then "backfeed" when printing the next label. Peel off mode is used if you want to print a label and have it "peeled" off the liner so that you can just pick up the label off the liner and apply it. That takes the rewind option to be installed.
Watch out though, if you are using a label software package, there might be a setting in the label format setup for "tear off" which usually overrides the settings in the printer.
Hope that helps !

Ok here is what I did wrong:
I just forgot to transfer the "Software Key" to get the full version of Label View.
