You have the polarity of the battery backward somewhere. Did you replace the starter and hook it up backwards. Difficult but possible. Check your positive and negative on the battery itself.
could be your motor coupling, clutch or brake linings. if it smells like rubber burning then it is your motor coupling,, ,,,,mine was doing that and found out the clip that holds on the part to disengage the brake had ground off the end of my basket drive tube and the arm fell down thus no spin ,part cost more than the washer is worth! guess i'll be picking up a new 1! yea the grinding noise could be in your clutch,brake area!
Your belt is worn and stretched and so it is slipping on the motor drive shaft. That is why it is noisy and smells like burning rubber. You simply need to replace the belt. You can get replacement belts here:
Sounds like you may have a vacuum line off or ruptured going to the EGR valve. The burning smell is probably the catalytic converter. When the engine runs rich you will get a sulfur smell that smells sort of like rotten eggs.
