Hoover Washer only agitates in one direction

Our washing machine agitator is only rotating in an anti-clockwise direction. It looks like it wants to rotate clockwise and I can hear the motor hum but the agitator seems to be blocked or being stopped from rotating clockwise. The motor still seems very strong and removing the washer's front panel doesn't reveal anything visible as to what might be the problem.
I can manually pull the belt to rotate the agitator in an anti-clockwise direction but it lock when pulling it the other way.
Bad gears perhaps?
Hoping for an easy fix (aren't we all) 8-)
Cheers!

    Hiya supertech272,

Thanks for responding! I see the plastic paw. If I manually pull it towards the solenoid (the magnet-looking device at the end, right?) as if to engage it, the agitator is indeed able to then rotate in both directions. I can't recognise if anything is broken and there are no plastic bits laying around in the bottom of the machine, so where might I look for the broken part? Is it at the solenoid end or the other (rounded) end? I could take a photo of it and email it to you if that would help.

    Many thanks!!!!

    Hiya supertech,

You were right on the money! Great advice, however I was under pressure to have a fix before the weekend and was extremely limited in my time. I ended up booking a repair man who charged me $140 bucks to replace what I was quoted by the parts place a bit over $23 for just the part.

So rather than cry over the lost moolah I'll be happy that I was really close to almost fixing it myself (with your guidance of course) and look forward to nailing it the next time.

    Cheers!

Check the paw. It is a plastic somewhat u shaped piece that sits on the bottom of the machine and is connected by a plastic lever and a solenoid. It usually breaks on the end and as such won't lock the gearbox in. If you keep running it like that there is every chance you will probably burn the motor out.

Sounds like it is the paw. Photoes would be great but look at the opposite end to the solenoid (the magnet thing) and there is the paw there that clicks into the cogs on the gearbox it will definately be broken at one end you won't actually see it till you remove it can be tricky sometimes to remove but doable. The fact that you manually operate the paw and it works tells me it has to be something to do with that paw or lever and the paw being the smallest and weakest part is the most likely culprit.

Why is my washer spinning instead of agitating?

Check your cogs. Pull the top off agitator off and look inside.
Depending on model has different typed of cogs that slide and catch when working properly. The do wear out.
Also known as "dog ear cogs". Very cheap parts. $2.

Simpson swt8043 top loader washing machine agitates anticlockwise only from new.

The agitator is designed to “ratchet” and turn one way but not the other. If your clothes are being twisted, that is most likely a transmission problem where it tries to agitate and spin at same time

The agitator is only working in one direction so the washing is getting tangled

The top portion of the wash tub agitator is designed to rotate in the clockwise direction. It should be intermittent. Turn stop turn stop ....in its normal operation.

There is a set of plastic cams that allow for this function. Below the top agitator the lower agitator goes back and forth. With a short load the water just reaches the upper agitator. Try short load. Other possibility the tub is under filled try increasing the water level.

Why is our machine not washing as normal ?

Have you trued clearing the drain at bottom of machine? If not that, it sounds like a programmer fault.

Agitator does not rotate during washing , but rotates during spin dry

Is the agitator a back and forth or does it only agitate in one direction. While it is spinning if the agitation mechanism is broken the agitator will spin with the speed of the bowl and just freewheel. you need to look to see if it is a belt driven agitator, if it is buy a belt for your model number of your washer and find someone handy to fit it if you cant yourself. If it is mechanical agitator chances of fixing it yourself are slim. Weigh up the cost of parts and labor as well as call out fee for the repair man and check if its easier and cheaper to just get a new washer.

My whirlpool ultimate care 2 washer works great, however, the agitator misses and clicks before it catches up

Is this a two piece agitator? You may just need dogs, they are inside the agitator. Rotate the top of the agitator back and forth, top should engage the bottom portion when turning counter clockwise.

Necklace stuck in washer

Hold the bottom part of the Agitator,(The part that you are talking about),Undo the very top part in an anti-clockwise direction and it will come right off.Use a wrench to remove the nut on the top of the agitator and then lift it right out,you may need to move it from right to left. You will now be able to remove the necklace.Replace the Agitator the reverse of removal.
