Is it MS Office 2003 ?
Can you open Excel by clicking on it's icon?
If so, go to Control Panel>Add/Remove programs> scroll down to Microsoft Office 2003. Click on change. A box will open up and you and choose "repair and fix". Let it run . it should fix it.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

What else can you do in this case?

Another variant might it was developed only for severe cases with excel documents

The first thing to try is to open it with the Repair option in Excel. You can do this by clicking on File and then Open. In the Open dialog box, single click on the Excel file and then click on the small arrow next to the Open button.

Go ahead and click on Open and Repair and you'll get a message asking if you want to repair, which will recover as much data as possible or if you simply want to extract data, which will copy out the formulas and values.

You can try to recover xls online first and see if it can recover the whole file, if not, you can then try to extract the data. Online Excel file recovery service

How to Recover an Excel File for Free

1.Check the Recycle Bin--if you've accidentally deleted the file, it should still be there unless you've emptied the bin, and you can click on the file and recover it.

2.Use the Auto Recovery Pane when you open Excel. Review the document recovery pane. If Excel has managed to recover your file, it will show in a separate pane on the left-hand side. Identify your document in the pane, then click on it and choose "Open" to open the recovered file.

3.Try manually repairing the file. Click on "File" in Excel 2003 or the "Office" button in
Excel 2007, then select "Open" and click on the arrow next to the "Open" button. Click on
"Open and Repair" and choose from two options: click on "Repair" if you want to try to completely recover the file, or click on "Extract Data" if you previously tried Step 1 and it did not work.

4.Search for the file manually on your computer. When performing a system search (click "Start" and select "Search" in Windows XP and Windows 2000, or press the "Windows" button and "F" key in Windows 7 and Vista), make sure you choose "Advanced Search Options" and then check the "System and hidden files" check box. You may be able to find your missing or corrupted file using this search: double-click on the file name in the search results to open it.

Windows 7 program windows xl wont open file

Are you using the same version of Microsoft Excel that you created the file with? If you created in in a newer version, then open it in the newer version, and go File > Save as.. and save it as an older version of the excel document, that is backwards-compatible.

I cannot open .docx and xlsx files.

The files extensions you have listed, .docx and .xlsx, are files that have been created using the Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 suite of programs. Specifically .docx is a Microsoft Word document, and .xlsx is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. You will have to have either of the Microsoft Office programs mentioned, or you can also use the Open Office suite of programs. This is a free program that you can download at the following website:

Everytime I try to open an application, itunes opens instead.

Uninstall iTunes -- it's _free_ software, so it can be re-installed later.

Then, open My Documents, and double-click on a file (a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet, or a PDF file) and see which program Windows chooses to open to "handle" the file that you double-clicked.

When I try to open a word doc. or excel document there is an error message and microsoft will not open them. but i can open the document through word or excel, by using the open feature. but just by double...

you have to right click the file (word doc. or excel doc.) and select "open with". A window will appear that allows you to choose which program will open this file. Select word for the word docs and excel for the spreadsheets and select the option to always do this for these files types. Once the default program has been set all other files with those extensions will now open with those programs. Deleting file from Excel also from recently created documents.

Hi jv_oberg,

The recent documents area of excel is just a snapshot of what it last opened, it's not really linked that document to excel. Eventually, after you open enough documents it will fall off the list. However, if it something that you would like to change, you can

  1. Click on Office button, and then click on Word Options (in Word 2007) or Excel Options (in Excel 2007) or PowerPoint Options (in PowerPoint 2007) in the bottom of Office Menu.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab.
  3. Scroll down to the Display section.
  4. Set the value for Show this number of Recent Documents: to 0 (zero). no-of-recent-docs.jpg
  5. Click OK button.
  6. Repeat steps above again, and set back the value for the number of Recent Documents to show to its original default, i.e. 17. If you don’t want this particular Office 2007 application to remember any Recent Documents, you can leave the value at 0 and skip this step.

That will clear your recent documents.

Good Luck,

Mark

Ms word, excel, powerpoint wont open anymore

Apparently your Microsoft Office files have been deleted or damaged. Try System Restore first (Open Control Panel, click on 'Performance and Maintenance' then in the left column choose 'System Restore' and follow the directions for "Restore my computer to an earlier time"). If this doesn't help, you'll need to completely re-install Microsoft Office.
