Not a solution but a request .  Palmbeach, please can you give me the information about repairing a DMR E55 as this seems exactly what I  need for my DMR E50 which will no longer read or record DVD-RAM discs.  It still works perfectly with DVD-R.

I cannot find your previous postings about repairing the recorder.

Thanks

You will have no problem playing your non finalized discs on any of the Panasonic DMR range including the DMR EZ28 series. The DMR E55 can also easily be repaired if you can use a soldering iron and a little care. Please checkout my other postings for full repair details.
Cheers...

By the way, if you want to be sure your discs will play, take one to a local retailer that has the model you are thinking of buying and ask if you can try it. Most retailers will be helpful, especially with things the way they are right now...

    Hi

Sorry my posting wasn't much use to Pidley, I thought it was a pretty comprehensive response that more than answered his question.

Question - "Will my unfinalized discs play on the panasonic ez 28 or 768?"

    Answer - "YES"

His response - Thanks for trying! Great! :-(

What more did he need to know?

Repair info can be found here

If your recorder is working with DVD-R then this may not be the fix?

    Kind regards

    Palmbeach

Self checking

I have had a Panasonic DMR-E85 with this exact same problem you are describing. As I bought a Freeview Dual-tuner PVR I just bought a second-hand DMR-E55 as I liked the Panasonic interface. Two months down the line it is now exhibiting the exact same problems, except now as well as the continual self-check rebooting, it's also refusing to eject the disk. Booo. Time for me to buy a new DVD recorder again, and this time certainly not Panasonic... :(

DMR E55-P will not read DVD-R

Hi Benyto

Thank you for the information. Sorry that you are having such problems.

Nearly all the problems on ths DMR E55 are due to a faulty power board. The greatest load on the power supply is when the unit first reads discs and also when finalizing. Sometimes the unit cannot read discs and sometimes it continuously self checks.

Try replacing IC001 on the power board. This is a 5 pin regulator #STRG6353. This component gets very hot and the heatsink is poor. When I replace these, I use a larger heatsink and some heatsink paste which helps to prolong the life of the component. If you look at the regulator, you will see by the colour of the circuit board that it gets very hot. It fails after two or three years in all DMR E55s.

Be careful when you take the old regulator out because the print can lift away from the circuit board.

I have posted full instructions on how to replace the STRG6353 >HERE<

Hope this helps

Dvd model DMR-E55

Hi

IC001 STRG6353 on power board may be faulty, mentioned also in several other threads.

Available from various suppliers.

DVD Recorder keps re-starting self test & will also not finalize discs.

This seems to be a common problem with the E55 and E85 models, could be one of two things, either the RAM Drive or the Power control ic (STRG6353 primary side of PSU), i would suspect its the latter. You'll need an engineer to replace this component.

Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder Problem

I have been told that panasonic now have a faster speed disc on sale to suit the newer dvd recorders that dmr-e55 cannot record on as they are too fast. You have to buy the slower speed ram discs to suit the dmr-e55.
