Found a lot of questions on this and can't pinpoint which solution to try... This is exactly what is happening: The entire time the TV is on the status light flashes 5 times at 3 seconds intervals. The screen goes black for a few seconds, comes back on and goes off again for a longer period, and comes back on, all the while the audio is fine. Also the picture looks like a 3D movie, until I press the button that corrects the colors. This works for some time but as soon as the flashing happens, the screen goes back the way it was, distorted and 3D-like. I'm seeing this is a common problem, I just want to see if I can catch someone who knows what to do at little or no cost to me. Thanks so much, this TV was a bi*&% to bring upstairs so needless to say I don't want to ditch it if I can fix it!!
Replace your convergence ic's and bias resistors. Good to go!

I had the same exact problem.
I removed the bulb and cleaned it. There is a small screen at the top of the bulb and it was covered with dust. Once it was cleaned I replaced the bulb and it solved the problem.

A few questions:
1) You state that the picture returns and the standby light flashes 5 times, is this correct? Normally, there is no picture seen when the 5 blink condition occurs.
2) Does this set work correctly sometimes or does it fail all the time?
3) Prior to the 5 flashes were there any other symptoms at all?
This may be a simple repair. Please update this with the responses and a more detailed exmplanation and possible solution will be provided.

The light is blinking a code. The code will be a series of blinks, a pause and the blinks again. Phone Sony service and give them this code. They will be able to advise you as to the problem.

I also heard a small popping sound... that just started recently while the flashing on and off screen has been going on for about 5 months
