Samsung front load model WF317AAG/XAA Will not operate. Makes humming sound when turned on. Stopped during washing cycle, I removed towels and drained. I checked drains for obstructions and reconnected. Turned back on and all it does is make the same humming sound.

I would gently suggest as a first step that you clean the drain motor lint tray/filter. So many 'faults' are caused by blocked filters and many machines will not even go to spin or release the door lock if there is any water still left inside.
Here are my complete guidance notes for checking both the drain motor filter and the drain motor ;-0)

If you are unsure where the filter is, it is often behind the front lower (kick) panel (or in some machines at the rear in an awkward position!) and most are held in by a round cover/knob. Sometimes the filter will not come out with the cover and you will have to persuade it to come out to play!
REMOVE POWER AND ENSURE YOU HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE/RAGS TO SOAK UP THE WATER WHICH IS BOUND TO POUR OUT!
It's surprising what people have found in theirs! It is always worthwhile checking it on a regular basis.
Now- whilst the filter is removed it is normally possible to see the drain motor and ensure it is not jammed by a foreign object such as a needle or a toothpick. It should be able to be turned by hand/finger- the power IS OFF!
At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. Using something suitable like a glove see if it is easy to briefly slow the motor down. If it is easy then the motor is malfunctioning!
If these actions have not cured the problem, it could be the control board OR the main motor- motors will show weaknesses when commanded to spin but it not draining I think is the clue to the problem.

My wife uses color sheets in the wash. Guess what jammed up the impeller! It was thin enough to get to the pump intake and wrapped around the impeller blades. Thanks for the tip!!! Saved a bunch of time and money on this fix! Plus made me look good ! ;-)

What type of water hoses are hooked up to it? If you have the flood safe hoses with the check valve in them then there isn't enough water pressure to distribute the softener.

lefever352, I am currently trying to solve this same issue on the identical model. I removed , cleaned, and re-assembled all the water tubes and the entire pump assembly. The pump works but for some reason it is not priming into the drain tube. The pump assembly appears to have a diaphram over the outlet opening and it it looks like this might be the problem. I am still hunting the solution, BUT so far the above actions have to resolve our issue. I hope perhaps Fixya can help.

Well there is only one problem .The door wont open because it has water in it and that is what its suppose to do. ON the drain part it could be one of a few but here they are for you to check out . Make sure drain hose is attatched and not clogged,the pump or the relay that turns on the pump isnt working. will Have to take cover off to see all these things and if youve never dealt with such matters bite the bullet and call some one. Less headach and it will get fixed a lot faster and you wont get hurt
