My GE Profile Washing Machine Keeps Stopping

I have a Profile washer that's about 16 years old. The only problem it has is in the middle of a wash or rinse cycle, it just stops.

It doesn't do this all the time, but when it does I have to keep stop-starting it about every 5 minutes.

It has a couple of secondary symptoms that make me think it's not a timer issue.

1. During agitation, it appears that only one of the directions actually turns the load. This creates what looks like a slow 'spin' cycle during agitation, and if the water level is set to high, some of the water will spill over as a result.

2. When it is NOT having this problem, the end of a spin cycle will stop relatively quickly (within 10 seconds or so). When it IS having this problem, the end of a spin cycle will take well over a minute to completely stop.

It almost appears as if a gear of some sort isn't catching.

Does anyone have a solution to this? I would really appreciate it.

Repair requires replacement of the transmission / break assembly. Unless you are really attached to this machine, it's time for a new machine. Average life of a washer is about 11 years doing 8 loads per week. Look into the front load machines, which use about 1/4 the water and spin about twice as fast, and are gentle on fabrics while cleaning very well. Please don't bother rating this, as non FixYa ratings drop my rating, and I'm sure you don't want to shoot the messenger.

Washer stops several times in the middle of cycle

possibly it could be your un-balance switch getting very sensitive to any type of movement of the machine, normally they only actuate during the spin cycle when you have a very off balanced load of clothes

1.5 year old ge profile washing machine will not agitate or spin

Timer seems to have gone bad. Manually move the timer to make the dryer spin. If you get it to spin and drain then it's your timer.

GE profile washing machine won't agitate it spins out, drains,

Pull the agitator out and check the drive collar splines. If you have the model I think you have just pull straight up on the agitator. Once removed you will see the drive collar with a 7/16 head bolt, remove it and pull off the collar.First before pulling it off spin it if splines are stripped it will spin freely.

This sounds like a drainage problem. First thing is to check the filter behind the flap on front of machine.

Keeps stopping after 10 seconds of operation

Motor is bad and needs to be replaced. It is drawing too many amps and tripping its overload. Once cool it will run again only to stop. About $100 for the motor.
