I try to install Windows XP by using a remote disk drive, but with no way to load the software for it the system reports "PXE-61: Media test failure, check cable..." Catch 22.
I have also acquired the hard drive for this model but when I try to load the software still no joy.

reboot, before it asks for pw hit the F button option for entering BIOS setup. Once in change what ever you want i.e. password boot options etc...

You need to remove the bios password.. In desktop systems you can remove cmos battery from motherboard and clean the password. but in laptops and in other types you need to short the jumpers. for that please click on the below link and follow the image.

or else Install operating system from a CD-ROM.. in which you do not require any password.. you better install it from CD-ROM.. Its very easy also..Have any queries, please let me know..

First you need to flash the BIOS by disconnecting the battery on the motherboard.
2. Connect the battery again. Go to BIOS. Select the first boot device as CD ROM. Also you have to make sure that the Hard drive is connected to the motherboard and it has to be a primary drive. Also the Hard drive should show in the BIOS.
3. Once done save setting of the BIOS. Also insert the Windows XP installation CD
4. Once the computer restart you will get the option 'Press any key to boot from CD'. We have to be very fast in pressing a key.
5. It will start booting from CD. Accept the licent agreement. Click on fresh install. Format the drive using NTFS Quick and start installation. While installing you will get the window which will ask for regional and language setting. You need to make sure to select correct date and time.
6. In the network wizard select standard and the installation will be successfull.
7. Please go to www.windowsreinstall.com for the different screen you will get during installation.

You got to have the BIOS password as the laptop is now set to boot from a network, hence why PXE is showing up
You need to install XP using a CD rom, it wont work from a remote disk.
First remove the bios password, to do that you need to remove the cmos battery mounted on the motherboard and put it back.
Here is a picture of the battery:
Once you can access the bios, set it up for starting from CD (in boot sequence put CD first), then install Windows from a bootable CD.
An alternative ismaking the hard disk bootable, and copying into the HDs a copy of all install files, but that is more complicate.

More, you need the HD to be seen in Bios first, you need to access bios, reset bios password to proceed.
If you do not have CD rom you have few choices:
1 You buy an external CD rom for Panasonic CF-M34, that is difficult to find even on Ebay, but have a look.
2 you mount the HD on a different laptop, setup system, then mount the HD back on the Thoughbook, install drivers and other stuff using a usb disk.
3. You find a boot floppy and perform a network installation.
We are talking here of a laptop that is over five years old, I do not think this laptop has Bios drivers to install the system from a usb removable disk, that is probably the reason why you get the error message.
another solution, that will work, and is relatively easy to do, is the following:
Connect the HD to a different computer, using an adapter or a USB 2.5 HD caddy, Copy the wole content of a Windows XP SP1 , or win ME/98/2000 setup disk on the HD. Do this on all 3 HDs.
Put back disk inside Pana Thoughbook.
Start the Toughbookusing a boot CD, then from dos browse the HD and start setup.Exe.
This wont work on Vista or some XP sp2.

Ok...well..that may mean that the bios and operating system are incompatible...can you provide the revision of the bios and the operating system and we will see if they match up?
drive compatibility is rarely solved by attempting to install software that is potentially incompatible with the bios. the equipment you have, may not be compatible. i find the rating to be oddly configured..good luck with this one.

The CF-M34 is a small scale laptop and does not have a CD ROM drive.
