LCD screen black with white specs in picture and movie mode
Yesterday picked up the camera to take photos, but in both picture and movie mode the LCD screen is black (aside from lots of moving white specs ... the closest description is like the intro to Star Wars, but without the scrolling text). If I try to take a photo, the camera will go through the procedure, even flashing if required, but the image that comes out is completely black. When I switch the camera on and off, the lens does seem to go in and out correctly, and the lens cover successfully opens, so I don't think I have fallen into the trap of taking a photo with the lens still covered.
In picture play mode, all is fine ... the LCD screen successfully shows pictures that were taken without problems a week ago.
The camera was neither dropped nor immersed in water.
Can anyone help?
Toonz, thanks so much for taking the time to respond to this. It was indeed an old post, and I had already picked up another camera, but I still do have the original s200 in the cupboard and will definitely get it repaired - my young son will feel very proud that he has his very own digital camera now!
One final question: I'm now in the UK (although had bought the camera in the US). Am I still able to get this fixed in the same way? Toonz, thanks so much for taking the time to respond to this. Re: LCD screen black with white specs in picture and...
With the power off, hold the camera in your palm and smack the front of the camera on your leg or arm. You might have to smack it a few time to get it to work. It has to do with the camera CDD lense (shuttle) being stuck. By smacking it around, it will free up the lense. Being extra gentle with it though. It worked for me. Hope this help.

Know this is an old post, but really this sounds like a defective CCD imager. You may be in luck. Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. Please check the following two links for more info:

You should, as the advisory is worldwide. Here's the repair facilities in UK. Be careful in that I've noticed that some facilities are attempting a "bait and switch" in that they'll offer you an "upgrade" camera at an inflated price. If this happens, recommend turning them down as the upgrade is usually an old model camera at double the going price on ebay. Push for the free repair with free shipping on your old camera. If offered a replacement, it should also be free:

There's nothing really you can do besides getting it repaired. How's the warranty?
My guess is that the main circuit board will have to be replaced, and that could be expensive even if you find a place that can fix it 'in shop'. Canon offcourse will charge you the usual 150$.
Good luck

Place the camera in P, Tv, Av, M, Movie, or Stitch-assist mode. Press the Func/Set button, and scroll down to the "My Colors" icon on the left side (second or third icon down, should show "My Colors Off" at the bottom of the LCD). Now use the left/right buttons to select "B/W", and press the Func/Set button again.
Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.
Ah yes! you have pressed the display button. Turn the camera on and you see the icons in the display, look for the Disp button and press it, the display will cycle through its modes icons, black, image and icons.
I think ribbon connector of LCD is misaligned in your camera. If you are comfortable with it, please apart camera and readjust ribbon connector at main board.
That is actually the exact same thing I am experiencing but mine has grey lines on the display window. I was able to take photos to a grey screen connect it to my comp...low and behold my pics showed....I am furious....need some answers as I will never hear the end of it from my daughter.
