I have had my 50" Grand Wega for a little over two years, my pink spots started about six months ago just a few in the center, now they are scattered evenly and it seems that more appear weekly.....They are very annoying and extremly visible on light or white backgrounds. Has anyone had any luck getting Sony to respond? I have seen other blogs where this seems to be a growing problem.

I have pink spots in the middle of my screen, that seems to be getting worse. I called Sony customer support. They are unwilling to take responsability for this problem, all I get is a runaround. they claim that it is optic block. one person said they would cover it, another said they won't. noone at their customer service know's what they are doing. any help would be appreciated. I will never call or buy or recommend Sony again.

  • lew77 Dec 02, 2007

Pink squiggly lines in the bottom right hand corner. Started small and has increasd in size( like a squiggly cloud). We have tried turning the TV off and on, and unplugging the antenna. We also unhooked the TV from a reciever and unplugged the stereo and gaming system so that no other electronics are connected.

I have the 50 inch model, bought March 2005. The pink spots started in the summer and got worse over time. I now have yellow and blue spots starting. I called Sony who gave me a number of a technician in my area to call to have them assess the problem. The company sent a report to Sony. I got a call from Sony advising the report indicates it is environmental due to dust or smoke from the fire place. Should note I do not have a wood fireplace as the one he would have seen is electric. Sony advised that this would not be covered under the extended warranty, however are offering me a new TV kdl52w3000 for a cost price of 1000.00 (sells for around 3000.00). I asked them why they would do this if was not covered under warranty and they advised "just good will". I advised them that if it was dust it still relates to the optic block as it is their flaw design to not have this covered, protected from dust (new models are so dust does not get in). Everyone has dust in their house. They advised me to contact the technician again. I did this and I have to take another picture of the screen with a white background and a black background.........I will keep you posted as to what happens.

I have the KDF-50we655 model and two pink dots were noticeable at first. Later, there were a bunch of pink dots everywhere. Now there are pink yellow and blue dots all over the screen. I thought maybe the bulbs are going bad and need to be replaced, but after thinking about it i didnt want to spend money and the problem not be fixed. So now I just finished a search on yahoo and found this site where it seems everyone is having the same problems. Anyway, what can I do to get this fixed perminently? I did not buy the extended warrenty, but the first dots definitely did show up before a year of use. So any help would be very useful. If you can email me at [email protected]

  • geonetro Feb 22, 2008

I have the same problem. I also have blue dots along with the pink. I own the KF60WE610 60in tv. It started out with one pink dot and now they are everywhere. I called the service center and they don't think that Sony will cover this problem yet. Please let me know if anyone hears more about this problem

  • autiger30 Feb 23, 2008

I also have pink spots. they are starting to run together and be a blob. Just had to replace the bulb in November.

  • gspange Feb 26, 2008

I have the same problem. Does replacing the bulb (which is recommended after 3 years) take care of the pink spot problem? When I watch an ice hockey game and it's very noticeable. I also had the pink area problems on my Sony trinitron tube type TV.

  • dharmapoop Feb 29, 2008

Hey all, I have the "pink fingerprints" problem that so many seem to have on my kdf-50we655. Had the tech out yesterday to look at my set. He told me it was dust on the optic block and cleaning it ($350) often made it worse in his experience. He told me optic block replacement would be around $1150. I asked him about the "blue star" problem that sony is now covering the cost of and he said "oh yeah that's your set isn't it?." He then called in my pink spot problem and added some "blue spots"to my problem and it's getting fixed for me for just the $100 service call fee which I am ok with. hope this helps someone. we shouldn't be stuck in the middle of having to buy a new tv after 3 years because of a known design flaw.

  • D35J Mar 10, 2008

I have the same issue pinkish spots mainly in the middle of the screen. Just replaced lamp and then really noticed. talked with our local sony authorized repair center they told me it would cost $150 to clean out dirt in the optics.

  • Anonymous Mar 18, 2008

Same problem as others. Pink spots starting small then growing in size and number.

  • milkman873 Mar 29, 2008

I can tell you all right now, its not "dirty optics". It is the inside of the first of two layers of the screen. When I got my 42", it was a display model and the spots were noticed immedtiately. It was under warranty, so Sony replaced the screen. 3 years later, new spots...no warranty, so I decided to open'r up and take a look. I DO NOT recommend this...the layers of the two screens are placed together in a clean room....unless your house is in a bubble..you will get a dog hair or two because of static. So anyways...I used a dry cloth to wipe the inside of the first layer (which is the back of the side facing out)...and I used a dry cloth on the inside of the second layer. Keep in mind..I was not able to see any of the spots holding up either piece to a light source. After cleaning the inside of both pieces..I wet cleaned (water on wash cloth) the back of the second layer and windexed the mirror...which was disgusting. After ALL this work and 3 hours later, the spots were now pinkish purple....so I either made it worse or I was making it better but didnt do enough. I am calling Sony on Monday and complaining about the absolute junk of a screen they put in such an excellent television. Hope this helps out.

  • berude Apr 01, 2008

Have like pink clouds even with a black and white movie, it is slowly getting worse. Too bad it gets such a great HD picture. Sony said to call a Tech as my warranty ran out. It will be about 1000. to get it repaired.

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2008

kdf-42we655 -pinkish/purple fingerprints on screen. REplaced the bulb already before finding this information. $100 later ....

I'm going to call sony and report it.

    Sony customer service 800-222-7669.

    To be continued.....

  • bookwalk Apr 09, 2008

Purchased this unit in February 2005. Just last week, saw a bluish purple haze along the bottom just to the right of center. Called Sony--Reps don't seem to know much--talked to Supervisor--this is supposed to be covered under the Extended Recall through December 2008, but they could not answer this question: Is the replacement optical block of the same design and so will it go out in another 2-3 years? If so, then what--we are stuck?

Sears is due to come for evaluation tomorrow and I am going to video tape the whole process, so that, in 3 years, maybe we can just do it ourselves???

EVERYONE CALL SONY- SONY HAS EXTENDED ALL OF OUR WARRANTIES. i have this same problem with my 60" wega. i called sony and they explained to me that the problem was the optical light box. it cost a grip to fix even for them...so instead of fixing the problem they offered me the best true flats they had at way less than the actually price. i bought a 46" bravia for less than 550 including tax. i still have my 60" but until i get it fixed on my own this 46" will definitely do. i hope this helps you all

I just vacuumed out my 42 wega and it looks 100% better. Not for the faint of heart but it was free and only took me 2 hours.

I have a 5 yr old Sony Grand Wega 42 projection also. It has developed a blue glow about 2 inches wide on the bottom of screen and a larger blue color on the lower right corner of screen. And when the set is turned off, they're a dozen blue dots appearing on the screen. I'ved changed the light bulb 1 yr ago and I was wondering if removing the bulb could I get to the area where the dust is located and vacuum of wipe it off! Any ideas, can't get any from sony! Picture quality is great otherwise. [email protected]

The spots you are seeing is dirt collecting inside your TV mostly in the LCD cube. The LCD cube is what gives your Soney that great picture. It is easy to clean with just an air hose but be careful with the LCD cube because it is very fragile and easily damaged.

  • Anonymous Apr 12, 2008

I gave the correct information about these pink spots being dust on the LCD cube (also called the optical block) and the information was rated inappropriate! I clean and repair Sony LCD cubes (optical block). Please do your homework before rating!

I think it's safe to say that we all have the same common problem with the pink spots. I too was told it would cost about $1200 with labor to replace the optical block. As a FREE solution, I would like to get in there myself and clean the optical block, lens, and mirror with a soft cloth to remove the dust. Does anyone know the proper instructions for removing the front panel to get in there? I have taken apart all of the screws on front, but it's not coming off, and I'm afraid that some wires are still connecting.

To JudiRoddis-your problem may be covered under the Sony updated warranty info. On their website they are offering to pay for replacement on units with the blue screen problem.

This tv is a piece of junk! I've had the optical box replaced once due to a blue haze and now it's doing it again with a giant blue spot on the screen and "stars" on the other side. I called Sony and they told me I am SOL. Don't buy Sony!

It's not worth the aggravation. I am going to trash the unit, inform others not to buy Sony, and buy a new TV from another manufacturer. you would expect after paying $2500.00 for a TV that you would at least get 10 years out of it. or at least customer service, which at Sony is nonexistent.

  • Anonymous Apr 12, 2008

I agree, I am referring all my friends to buy Samsung. I have put signs up, and reported by word that sony, I cannot even capitalize their name any more, is nothing but junk!!!!

If you put the set on an unused input and darken the room. do the spots look like round snowballs? if so you have dust in the optics, a technician should be able to clean it..if there are jagged lines in the picture then the lcd screen is bad ant the optical block needs to be replaced..what is the exact model number of the set?

Sounds like you are describing a slight misconvergence. Go to the setup menu, select convergence and do a complete convergence setup. If this doesn't solve the problem you probably have a bad digital convergence box and will need a technician to replace it.

Sony does know about this issue and understand the problem. I called sony for tech help, and right away they told me it was the optical block. They offered to sell me a brand new Bravia LCD 46" for $225.00 plus tax and they will take care of shipping. I took their offer and will not look back. They know that this TV has ventilation issues and are trying to make it right by making the customer happy.

To every owning a rear projection tv some of you these color blotches this is very common first it is and it is not your fault.its is your fault for not reading maintenance manual then the company or the seller dont tell you that this is a high maintenance device there are filters and vents on these units thei need to be cleaned every week. a small amount of dust is enough for a melt down.lcd's are very sencetive to cold and heat this is liquid folks freeze and it will expand heat it it will do the same or dry up so when you throw the projection tv in the play room put someone in charge of cleaning the filters and vents and it you got these color problem its to late need to change the lcd's. i've done it its very easy find the part is not because those a-hole's the mfrg wont sell the parts so sorry for your lost. i have these projection
that i paid almost nothing i maintaine them and they work beautiful .if your's is in good condition and have one color problem find the same unit with other issues like no power and buy it cheap and have some tech guy change the lcd for you.if your in the boston area i might be able to help.

My 4 YO 50" $ 2,800 Wega is exibiting both spots AND the creeping blob. Called SONY support. They told me to unplug TV and replug . No good. They sent out a SONY repair guy. They now want $1,200 to fix this piece of junk!! I was refused a fix saying is too late. I am filing complaint with NY Attorney General and suggest all here do the same in their states. This is FRAUD. I can get a new 46" flatscreen for $1,600 with updated tech.

I bought my wega 42 in 2006, they tell me at sony its magnetic. Likely from the peakers. They are wrong. And no dealer, or shop I have contacted has said anything about replacing anything for free, the only thng that is availble for these units, is a software upgrade to fix a power problem.

I had the same problem. Went by the dealer I bought it from, explained the problem. He said its a common problem and that Sony extended the warranty on this part. He ordered the part and received it the next day, it took one day to repair. At no cost to me. I believe its called the optical light box. Picked the set up today and the picture is perfect.

NO remedy....many WEGA owners have this SAME problem...do not take my word...google "Pink Spots Sony WEGA" PINK SPOTS ARE FROM DUST COLLECTING INSIDE THE SCREEN Not covered under warranty either...Sony claims that is an enviornmental issue. We all all SOL sorry to say...plus Sony denies receiving simular complaints...seems we call Sony they just don't document or are being untruthful. FYI...I live large in upscale clean home. In my opinion...this is NOT NORMAL for a 2000.00 Projection TV.

If its a LCD screen you may have liquid inbetween the layers of the screen. Thats only a possibility if you had the unit near some kind of water or windex mayhave gotten in it. Only way to get rid of it is to leave it in a warm place for a long time. or take it apart and dry it.

Sony 42" grand wega LCD

We Cleaned the optic block as was instructed by another post. But now we have a wide ribbon of light yellowish to the right of our screen. Could it be more dust to be removed or now we can see there is more problems then we thought? Over all the screen looks much better. But a far cry from when it was new.
