If it won't close the only other option you have is to break the outer collar and use a chisel to hit on the exposed jaws inside the chuck. I have detailed instructions in the tip section on how to remove a chuck from these drills. Let me know if you need more assistance.

Most chucks have a tolerance the cordless drills where designed for drill bits 1/8 and larger the 3/8 chucks are a little better with the smaller bits .Check your owners manual and see if they have a min requirement listed for the bit size

Put the screw back in the chuck, tighten it up then back it out 1 turn. Take a punch, put it in the chuck and give it a quick hit with a hammer. That should do the trick.

SOURCE: Dewalt Drill DC728. Chuck came out of drill body

If you find that the end of the screw inside the chuck is actually broke then you have a gear problem inside your drill. This is actually a very common problem. Sometimes people push too hard on their drills and the gears inside wear out and break. This prevent the motor from wearing out, but, the gears have to be replaced.
If it is the gears and not the chuck. you broke the minimium of the front gear or gears inside your drill. YOU CANNNOT repair gears. they need to be replaced. you may be able to find some off brand gears to work but, you run the risk that they are not as strong as your original ones, or may not be exactly grooved correctly.
so, if replacing your chuck does not work. find replacement gears. IF you cannot find the gears from the manufacturer see about replacing your drill.
If the chuck is still good, keep it. If you buy the same model, keep your old drill for replacement parts, ie, switch, armature, cord, etc.
hope this helps somewhat.

I'd put penetrating oil in it and tap the chuck with a plastic hammer. That should free it up.

How do I remove the keyless chuck on my 14.4 cordless B&D drill

The chuck is held onto the shaft with a Philips screw. Open the chuck, insert the screwdriver and turn CLOCKWISE to loosen the screw. The chuck will still be connected to the outer thread on the shaft. Slide the drill direction slider to the middle position to lock the motor. Put an Allen key in and close the chuck around it. You will now be able to use that to twist the chuck off.

Black & decker BD602 cordless drill

open the chuck up as wide as possible . At the bottom of the chuck you will see a Phillips headed screw . AS this is a left handed thread screw it will you to turn it as it screwing it in to undo it. This is a lock screw that stops the chick undoing when in the reverse direction mode Once it is out then use the key in the hole and teeth and hit the key sideways sharply to unscrew the chuck of the drive shaft. Replacement is the reverse procedure. Do not loose the screw as replacement part is not available unless you have a junked drill that you can get it from

12 volt black and decker keyless chuck will not close. Model CD120G

Try giving the inside a spray with WD40 then try closing the chuck. Check that there is not a left handed screw in the center of the chuck that has become partialy unscrewed. The chuck can jam open and just need a strong gril to release it. If the outer sleve of the chuck is turning but nothiing happens then you will need to get the chuck replaced.

Sounds like something may be binding. Try applying some very light (sewing machine) oil to the chuck and other parts, and working it in. Perhaps, over time, it will loosen up.

How do I exchange bits in the keyless * BLACK & DECKER 12-Volt 3/8" Cordless Drill

In Black and Decker drills when the drill stops turning the chuck spindle locks automatically. All you have to do is grip the outer sleeve of the chuck and turn it anti clockwise to open it. Turn it clockwise to close it. When you press the trigger to start drilling the spindle unlocks automatically again.

I have a Black & Decker 18V cordless drill with keyless chuck. The spot where the drill bit fits is in the open position stuck and won't turn in either position. What am I missing how to unlock it?

Look at the three jaws in the chuck,if on is further out than the others the you need to tap ti back into place with a small punch and a hammer. If this does not work then you need to replace the chuck, remove the screw at the bottom of the chuck[where you put the bit],then you will need to to clamp vise grip on the chuck and with it pointed away from you hit the vise grips with a hammer with a sharp blow downward and it should come off.Hope this helps.

Can't remove the chuck on a drill.

There are one-way (non-reversible) and two-way (reversible) drills. Mine is one-way. Methods for chuck removal are different for these two types.
Procedure for one-way (non-reversible) drills:
Drills of this type have no chuck screw, so one have to hold the spindle with a wrench, than to sharply strike the wrench with a hammer to spin it off.
Procedure for two-way (reversible) drills:
Open the chuck up and in the bottom is a screw that holds the chuck on the shaft. The screw turns in a clock wise motion to be removed and then you can top the chuck off the shaft.
