How to get a stuck drill bit out of large tree stump flesh with ground?

My drill bit is stuck in a large tree stump that had been cut close to the ground

  • Anonymous Feb 02, 2012

Is the bit vertical or horizontal?

  • Anonymous Feb 03, 2012

Good question. The bit is at a slant.
Preparing stump (Tree that was cut down to 3 to 4" above ground level) for decomposing with 1" size holes from bit to pour Stump Killer ingredient so that the roots will die off. Each slanted hole in the side of the stump meets with the holes at top. I learned that Grinding stumps does Not kill roots.

Today I went to a Home Depot/Lowe's and tried more powerful drills. Finally I went to rent an industrial drill. But they didn't have one to rent. The one on the shelf was $399. Sales guy suggested I get a large ((monkey wrench)) to grip the back of the bit that is sticking out of the stump and PVC pipe with elbow to turn it. It's a slow process but I've been turning it with just the monkey wrench alone. And I'm a girl. I'll finish tomorrow.

SOURCE: makita 6222D hole drill bit is stuck

When this happened to me I held the shaft of the drill bit tightly with my hand and reversed the direction of drive for an instant. It released at that point. It still does that occassionally though.

How to stop tree roots from sprouting after the tree has been removed

Hi Susan,
I work in Tree Removal professionally so I think I can answer this one.
There are several methods you can use to prevent tree roots from sprouting after the tree has been removed:
  1. Cut the roots as close to the trunk as possible: This will remove the root's energy source and make it more difficult for the roots to regenerate.
  2. Use a root inhibitor: These chemicals are applied to the stump and can prevent new growth by disrupting the root cells' ability to regenerate.
  3. Remove the stump: If the tree stump is small enough, you can remove it entirely using a stump grinder or by digging it out manually.
  4. Cover the area with a thick layer of mulch: Mulch can help prevent light from reaching the roots, which can inhibit sprouting.
  5. Plant a new tree or ground cover in the area: This can help prevent roots from sprouting by providing competition for resources.
It's important to note that it may not be possible to completely prevent tree roots from sprouting after the tree has been removed. Some roots may regenerate even if you use these methods. It's always best to consult with a professional tree care service if you have concerns about tree roots on your property.

When idiling at slow speed when I hit a stump motor bogs down like floats are stuck gas leaks from carbs what causes this

Hit a stump? like the cut-off base of a tree? Cool if it's a dirtbike. It seems like you got the idea yourself. If the carb doesn't leak fuel under normal conditions then it is possible the bowls are overflowing. If you suspect this, the carb needs to come apart to see whats wrong. If you're lucky it may just be a bit of grime or rust jamming the float needle and making it operate strangely.

My bit in my drill is stuck into a large tree stump... that had been cut close to the ground. How can I get the bit unstuck? My dewalt drill is unable to drill in & drill out.

If it's a twist bit try putting a vice-grip pliers on the end and turn it so the fluting pushes the bit out. If it won't move or if it's a spade bit you'll have to split the wood around the bit. You may or may not be able to do this with the offending part of the stump in the ground. Using a wedge, drive it into the stump near but not next to the bit so you don't damage the bit. Don't drive the wedge flush into the stump or you may get the bit out and then have the wedge stuck. Worst case, carefully use a chainsaw to cut out the stump so you can split the wood around the bit.

How do you use roundup to kill a tree stump?

Hello, I am a grower and licensed pesticides applicator (40 yrs exp).
Roundup lost the trade mark years ago,"glyphosphate" which is now marketed (cheaper) under many other names,
Will kill a live tree if sprayed on the leaves! Also will damage young trees if you just get over spray on the trunk while spraying weeds.
Also, kills grass as well as broadleaved plants.
To kill a tree you would need to spray the leaves, then wait at least a month before cutting the tree down. I have successfully killed a few stumps by spraying the live suckers.
Be especially careful of spray drift as the finer the droplets are the more effective the chemical is. Read the label!

HAve clausing 1650. Large Drill bits overheat and

You should use a honing type of oil when drilling with large bits. There is a tremendous amount of friction and the oil keeps the bits cooler when cutting.

Matika hammer drill - bit stuck

The spade bit sold with the hammer drill was actually too large for the hammer drill. We found that the spade bit had over heated (not from overuse or heavy use as only two ladies were using the hammer drill) but because the bit was too large it put too much weight on the drill. The bit had to be removed from the chuck using a hammer and force causing a bearing to come out and the chuck now needs repair. Solution repair the chuck on the hammer drill and buy a lighter spade bit. Then continue jackhammering the cement out of the shower cubicle.
