Canon Powershot S2 IS Super Macro mode

I have this camera and connot get the Super Macro mode to work. I repeatedly press the macro button but never get it go in to this mode, it just switches between macro and normal!! Am I doing anything wrong? Bryn

Once you press the macro button you will get Macro mode. Next Keep pressing the macro button for a while ( 3 - 4 seconds), you will get super macro. Enjoy Mrinzo

Make sure your camera isn't zoomed in (full telephoto) The camera can't handle both full zoom AND super macro. Don't forget super macro goes from Zero to 20cm from the lens. Zoom completely out and you should be able to see something within that range. The biggest complaint I've heard about the S2 IS is if you take closeups of bugs the chances of the bug crawling onto your lens is pretty good.:-) Be very carefull of blocking light with the lens at extreme closeup too. Although the flash squelches well to allow for closeups it can leave a nasty shadow. If you're really serious about macro you'll find a ring flash would come in handy. BMW

Hi there,
The camera has a Macro mode as well as Super Macro mode, in which it can focus as close as 0 inches (zero inches).

Focus Range:

Normal: 50 cm (1.6 ft.) - infinity (W)/ 90 cm (3.0 ft.) - infinity (T)
Macro: 10 - 50 cm (3.9 in. to 1.6 ft.)
Super Macro: 0 - 10 cm ( 0 to 3.9 in.)

The camera will not focus when I try to take up-close shots. Such as an eye. I would like to photograph just an eye but whenever I try to zoom or walk in close enough the camera refuses to focus, haha....
Normally the closest focus you can get is 1.6 ft at W and 3.0 ft at T. In Macro mode you can get down to 3.9 inches. In Super Macro mode you can get even closer.

To get into Macro mode, press the Flower button until the flower appears on the LCD. To get into Super Macro mode, keep pressing the Flower button until an S appears inside the flower.

For full details, refer to your manual. In my copy, it starts on page 56.

Canon SX200 IS macro focus problem
I have the exact same problem, with macro, super macro, or manual focus. Sometimes the macro focus works so well that I can actually capture finger prints on a subject. Other times (most of the time) the focus in macro mode just does not work.

I have read in some forums that it may be related to the amount of light being used when in macro mode; although that doesn't seem to fix the problem for me, maybe that will help your solution. Could you try it out, ie. try macro mode with a brighter light source?

I cannot get super macro mode
Turn the dial- the one that lets you select a mode. You have to be in certain modes to allow for super macro.... (I have a powershot S2) Try AV or manual, or a couple of others. There are a few that will not allow super macro. That's your problem. Good luck!

How to take Supermacro pix?
Super Macro will not work in "auto" mode. If you put it in "P" mode (and possibly the other manual modes) and then press the "macro" (little flower looking think) button to the left of the lens under "MF" (manual focus). It will display "hold for super macro" on the screen.

Super macro
Press the macro button once to get it to display the Macro Mode sign. Press and hold it after that to get it into Super Macro

Once you are in Super Macro, you can't move the lens so you MUST use the Manual Focus (MF) button that is located right above the Macro toggle button. While holding the MF button, use the 4 way directional pad to focus in and out. Press the Up and Down to focus.
You have to be REALLY close for Super mode.. less than about 6 inches

Hi,
There seem to be two stipulations for getting into super macro mode,
First you must be in scn ("A" or "S" mode's only) and "movie", "P", "TV", "AV" or "M" modes only.
Secondly the zoom Lens must be all the way out.. set at the widest angle.

Focus
Your camera has the ability to shoot Macro and Super Macro, although in some Dial Modes, you can't use Macro.

To engage the Macro mode, press once the button on the left side of the lens/camera that looks like a Flower. To engage the Super Macro mode, press and hold the same button for more than one second.

Macro mode range 3.9 in. - 1.6 ft
Super Macro mode range is 0 in. - 3.9 in.
To cancel Macro mode, press the Flower icon button once.
Zoom levels are limited, and you will know that when the zoom bar turns yellow. This means the zoom is not available at that zoom level.

Focus in Macro mode
1. Do not use the zoom while using macro. 2. When clicking the Macro button, click it again, only for 2 more seconds at the second click, it goes to 'Super macro' mode for zero distance. This works in the Canon S3 IS, I hope it will help you in the older S2 IS. 3. Use a tripod. 4. Use the timer for no movement when using a tripod. 5. Try using the manual focus, it does the trick when the camera doesn't focus automatically. Good Luck!
