SOURCE: 52HM84 Toshiba DLP with apparent failed lamp (replaced ballast)

I found R3 on the original board to be open, along with reading an open on CR1, D5 and D6. All the other transistors and the transformer check out. The only thing I have to do now is find out the specs of the diodes. The replacement board also had CR1, D5 and D6 open (R3 was OK). There had been some threads on various locations where remanufactured boards had bad components (the transistors were changed but not some of the other components).

What is a ballast board

The ballast is a power supply for the lamp---it produces over 10,000 volts to fire and run the lamp----when you replace the lamp the two wire plug it connects to goes direct to the Ballast.

The spark plug type wires are there for a good reason--lots of rf there.

Double check lamp went in correctly and mated with the plug it goes into.

Looking to try a ballast: Google the model number with the word ballast.

How and when to change the ballast in a DLP TV.

When you have replaced the lamp in your DLP projection TV, and you still get lamp warnings and blinking standby lights or the light levels are extremely low, compared to the old lamp, your ballast probably needs replaced. Odds are it shorted out or developed problems when the old lamp failed.

This is not a hard unit to replace on most sets but may require a little knowledge and familiarity with DLP projection units. The ballast makes the voltages for the lamp circuit. The ballast is generally located near the lamp and has two large soft rubber wires going to the lamp assembly. If you follow the wires from the back of the lamp, the box they lead to is the ballast.

Replacement of the ballast involves removing any screws holding the cover on and the board in the TV. Disconnecting any wires from their plugs. Mark them with a sharpie prior to removal for easy assembly using a different number for each connector.

Reassemble the unit using the new board and make sure that all covers are in place and all wires are properly connected. You may be able to download a service manual at http://www.retrevo.com which will help with part numbers and has instructions on the removal and replacement of the ballast as well as diagrams and pictures to help with disassembly and reassembly. Retrevo does not have all service manuals. If you want one and are willing to pay about $16 US go to http://www.servicemanuals.net . The manuals can be downloaded instantly.

Any parts needed may be obtained at http://www.encompass.com or http://www.shopjimmy.com . http://www.encompass.com sometimes will have the service manual for free download. Again they do not have everyone and it depends on your model, but it certainly is worth checking prior to purchasing one.

When the job is complete your unit should be operational. If there are more problems try my tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4916941-diagnose_repair_projection_tv_high to troubleshoot the additional problems.

Good luck with your troubleshooting. If you need more help let me know.

I have an ge proline magnetic t12 ballast it has two red leads two blue leads and two yellow where as my fixture has one red one blue and the hot and nuetral are wired through the other side of the bulb...

Need more information, how many lamps are in the fixture? The new ballast is for how many lamps? Basically you need to follow the diagram on the new ballast. If the new ballast is for a four lamp fixture one yellow gets capped and the other yellow goes to one side of each lamp on a two lamp fixture. Then on the other side one set either red or blue goes to the other side of the lamp one wire per lamp and the other set gets capped . Hopefully this helps parkeroc68_0.jpgparkeroc68.jpg

JVC DLP MOD#HD55G466 what is the voltage from power supply to ballast and into the lamp.I have no voltage to the lamp could it be ballast?

Hi,
Ballast board gets voltage from power supply connector CN90BL and volts readings are as follows:
Pin-1 = 380V DC
Pin-2 = Ground
Pin-3 = 15V DC
and output of ballast board would be 12,000 volts AC that goes to lamp to generate spark in its electrodes to produce high bright light.

If you get volts on input of ballast board but still lamp does not fire up then ballast board is not working.
Ballast board part number is QAL0765-001 and available with tv-part.com for $125
Hope these info will help you.
Thanks.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Please read carefully!
FixYourDLP.com has identified a potential hazard that may severely damage your Samsung TV with lamp code BP96-01653A!
Samsung DLP lamp units, model BP96-01653A may fail due to improper insertion. We discovered this while doing some tests on these enclosures. If you don’t install the BP96-01653A firmly into the TV, the housing connector may cause damage to both the ballast and the lamp—or even worse a fire.
You’ll know immediately if there’s something wrong because as soon as you turn your television on, and there’s white smoke emanating from the back of your television.
You should shut your television off immediately and open your lamp door and pull out that lamp. Inspect it and hopefully, you’ve just burned the connectors to the ballast, and not the ballast itself. Our testing has only caused the connectors to burn or melt, but don’t take any chances—we’ve never seen a fire, but we also don’t rule out the possibility of fires either.
Here is a correct installation method and the reasons why a bad installation will cause the connectors to burn:
IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING
Regarding the installation of a BP96-01653A lamp unit into a Samsung DLP Television.
Installation
Step 1
install_images_bp96-01653a_01.jpg
Figure A – Open panel, lamp unit removed
You must install the lamp unit to fit snug with the ballast connector.
To do this, align the lamp unit with the female ballast connector facing down, on the bottom side of the enclosure, then slide the lamp unit until it snaps into place. Check to make sure the unit is firmly inside the television.
Step 2 install_images_bp96-01653a_02.jpg
Figure B – Snapping the lamp into place
Snap the wire brackets in tightly by lifting the bottom set up to meet with the top bracket. The wire bracket keeps the lamp and lamp enclosure seated properly to reduce the risk of fire.
when installed properly, the unit should sit secure and slightly elevated from the floor of the compartment.
Step 3 install_images_bp96-01653a_03.jpg
Figure C – Close back panel securely
Once the lamp is firmly secure, close the back panel to engage the blue lamp door sensor switch. Leaving the door open will prevent the television from starting up.

Important Damage or Fire Warning
Because of the nature of the ballast or lamp driver, there is a risk of damage or fire to your television set.
The ballast ignites the lamp with up to 20kV of electricity to arc the gas tube inside. If the ballast does not have a firm connection with the lamp unit, the arc will occur between the ballast connectors (from the ballast to the lamp), which may cause a fire, or melt your plastic connectors. Indications of this are a rapid clicking sound, a burning smell, and/or a non-functioning lamp. If you improperly install the lamp into your television causing a ballast or lamp failure, this may void your warranty for the television or the lamp product.

No power to lighting ballast ,only lights up on loss of power 277v at emergency ballast

Follow the appropriate wiring exactly. There are about 6-8 different diagrams. Find your lamp type and number of lamps. Locate your ballast type (usually instant these days) Quite often these diagrams show a switch on the power lead going to the operating ballast. If it isn't on a switch be sure to wire it in with the lead to the emergency battery ballast.

Replace lamp and lamp light continues to blink and will not come on. lamp is good but will not power up. fan is on so there is power. any suggestions?

Usually if the lamp light starts blinking and it will not fire up after the lamp is installed then that means that you still have the lamp door of and the toggle switch that detects the lamp door being off is activated and so the tv is in failsafe mode and is not turning on to protect you. If you know that you have the lamp door back on and the switch is pushed back into place as it is supposed to be then the issue is most likely your ballast. The ballast can appear to be the same symptoms as the lamp. If the lamp itself was not damaged or broken then its possible the lamp was fine all along and the ballast is bad. The ballast is the board the connects to the lamp and charges up the high voltage to fire up the lamp. If it is damaged in some way then the lamp will not fire. Just as a precaution you can test the wire connected into the ballast from the power supply board and make sure you are getting voltage. If you are getting voltage and the lamp is good and the lamp door toggle switch is not activated or the lamp temp board wire is not unplugged then you definitely have a ballast problem. Those are the only components that can cause the lamp to fire. The lamp temp board is a little board on top of the lamp housing that just has 1 small wire connected to it that is a thermometer. If that is unplugged the lamp will also not fire. So, requirements for fire lamp:
1. Power from power supply board to ballast
2. Ballast converting power out to lamp
3. Lamp door switch must be suppressed
4. Lamp temp board must be plugged in and functioning.
