This problem is caused by malfunction of the power supply unit.
Due to loose solderings of some SMD components on the power supply board, one of the supply lines could not provide enough current if the screen is bright.
Please be aware that at longer term there will be a big bang from the set and there will only be sound, or the set doesn't work at all. In that case, two of the FET transistors will be shortened.
The new power supply boards do have an improved design to avoid problems in the future.
After removing the back cover and the internal shielding plate, replacement could easily be done by removing only eight screws.
Have you tried clicking the Photo button on the post editor's task-bar and following the instructions? Be sure to read all requirements and instructions. You are probably right to conclude that the problem is with the optical engine. However, due to the cost of a replacement,
I suspect that the problem is with the optical engine. Its definitely not the roadmap problem or dust. I'm wondering if the optical engine simply isn't seated properly. What happens if you push or pull on the top of the set? Does the area affected change?
The one gent was real close with his suggestion. Pull on the top of the cabinet. If the spot moves in relation to the edges of the screen, then it's in the engine. If it remains stationary, its the mirror. Those mirrors are notoriously difficult to clean.

Yes, you are experiencing an 'Optical Block' failure. Google 'Sony Blue Haze' and you will find a wealth of information relating to this particular occurrence. You could either replace it or get a new tv. If you need further help or have more questions, please let me know
Is this a European model, as I am in the states and don't recognize the number. It sounds like what I see here as being a bad optical block with the following conditions:
Is it a LCD or SXRD projector?
Does the problme show up on all inputs and is it visble in the OSD and menu?
If so, it is likely a bad optical block. Depending on the warranty and any extensions Sony has given in your area (in the US, Sony has extended the warranty on several optical blocks) you may have complete coverage, the block may be under warranty and you may have to pay labor, or you may have no coverage at which point you're looking at a pretyy hefty repair bill, think $800 - $1500 for the block alone. Hope this answers your question.
If this is a LCD projector, degaussing will have no effect whatsoever.
Yes you are likely looking at a bad optical block. You did not say that this was an LCD projector, but I am assuming so. Plesse disregard all of the other fixes offered; if this is an LCD set, then YES you have a bad optical block. Sorry!

SONY KF WE 50S1 PROBLEM WITH BLUE DOTS AND A GREEN TWINGE ON BOTTOM RIGHT HAND CORNER WORKING IT'S WAY TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE SCREEN. THE ACTUAL PICTURE IS GOOD. IS THIS THE OPTICAL BLOCK ON IT'S LAST LEGS. NOT A DEGAUSING PROBLEM.
Thanks for the help. Many hours of time saved by this advise. I feel sorry for so many people who purchased this sony system paying good money and for a 3 year tv. It was good to see Sony did help some by being persistant with their problem. I would have hated to be the first person ringing Sony about this problem just out of warranty. Thanks again.
