SOURCE: I added 1 GB DDR to my old Gateway ESX 500S as it
need to check see if can accept that much, might need bios update to handle it, if possible

Try tapping the F8 key while booting the computer, you will get the start up menu, choose safe mode, when you log on, go to the display settings, that is right click on the desktop, properties, screen saver, advanced and make sure that hibernation is off, along with turn off disks or whatever , probably see turn off monitor after XX minutes, I make ours 15 minutes (150 computers and servers), I don't let the disks turn off. Choose always on also, not home/office. Try this and see if these settings help.

SOURCE: Hpw do you replace the power source on a gateway
How do you know the power supply is the problem?
What issues are you experiencing?
Have you done any trouble shooting first? It could be a bad hard drive.
If you should need to replace the power supply first you need to get a replacement power supply for a gateway MFATXPNT ESX 500S - 300 watt power supply you can get here.
The next step is to unplug the computer from the wall > remove the case side access panel > ground yourself with an Anti-Static wrist strap cord so you don't fry *********** board electronics from static electricity discharge which can cost you a lot more to replace > now disconnect the plugs from the power supply wire harness, it may help to count the connections and mark them with a piece of tape or draw a diagram so you don't forget which loose cables should get reconnected to the new power supply. There will be at least one that connects directly to a plug on the mother board, DO NOT put tape there. > Next remove the screws which mount mount the power supply to the metal frame and slide out the power supply > slide the new power supply in the same way the other other was removed (note top from bottom) and then screw back to frame and reattach the cables > close the case > remove your grounded wrist band > plug computer back into wall and start the computer.
Congratulations, you have just replaced your power supply and ready to go.
IMPORTANT: Do not switch the power output selector switch on the power supply. Usually a recessed re switch which will adjust for european vs. US power input conversion.

On my model, there is a broad recessed area on the top of the case.
On the left-hand side of this area (as you face the front), there is a 3-inch-wide, grooved-surfaced latch that must be pressed inward (to your left) to free the left panel. If you are facing the left side of the unit, pressing this latch inward by grabbing the top of the panel as if you were going to pull it off by force naturally presses in the latch, opening the case.
If you're not seeing the latch, note that the top half of the front can be covered by a rotating
cover that covers the drive bays. When it is not covering the front, this rotating cover flips up and
around, coming to rest on the top of the unit in the broad recessed
area.
When this cover is flipped up and stored at the top of the unit, the case latch is hidden and not pressable. Flip the cover back down so that it's covering the drives, and you're good to go.

Why were you trying to replace ram or was it an upgrade....ensure all slots are clean incl the ram stick(s)
If you have a separate vid card / reseat it as pushing in ram can dislodge it.
