Great TV - approx 10 years old, picture has always been supurb, but recently the green has about disappeared. In adjusting through the Menu I cannot get the colors to come back right. Most noticeable watching football games where the field appears gray and very little green is noticeable, except in menue bar reads, etc. I have tried to super saturate colors and it has not helped. It also appears like the picture is getting darker. Otherwise the picture is very clear, precise, and good. What is the process and potential cost to get this repaired?
Currently weighing replacing with Plasma with decision based on cost diffenential repair existing or replace with new. On Cable TV so not concerned about the HD digital move in February 2009.
Unfortunately, the CRT (Picture Tube) is reaching its very end. Your set is not feasible to service even if the CRT would still be available from Sony or any jobbers.

no ....the tube will end up after 20 yrs in 10 yr old sony... it is worth if u fix it. randomly going black means...horizontal driver trans former is the problem..or any loose contact with the 110 volt supply to that transformer,,or any loose contact with line o/p transformer.. (horizontal driver transformer may be gone then tv behaves like this) if any other parts gone tv wont come back.... there may be a loose contact call a service pro..
sounds like a major fault with the line output transformer/power board. if no green on screen, tube is on it's last legs. Advise to scrap, not to repair, cost in excess of £200
sounds like the filament of the picture tube is losing voltage. normally this would be caused by a bad/broken/cracked solder connection. If this is the problem, it may not be too dificult to fix if you have the soldering skills and know what to look for.
Hi, IK circuit is engaging which basically means the picture tube is getting tired, the only "fix" is temporary (may get another year out of it). You have to increase the "screen control clockwise".
Remove back of set, follow large black or red wire attatched to picture tube down to the flyback transformer, mounted on flyback are two black controls, one is focus (leave it alone) the other is "screen", adjust it clockwise approx. 1/4 inch, remember that this is a high voltage circuit so use one hand in the set the other hand out of the set at all times, any questions ? e-mail me back, good luck, BMW Rider
Are you serious? You have used that television... in particular that CRT well beyond its predictable lifetime. Congratulations. Those are early symptoms of CRT failure. Your screen may turn green very soon also. It will occur any moment now. It is not cost-effective to repair. Welcome to the next generation. You will be amazed and delighted with LCD, plasma or DLP technology. [email protected]
The light flashing 5 times is normal at turn on as the set is monitoring current drain on the pictures tube cathodes. Any speakers near the set that have un-shielded magnets could possibly cause color issues.
Sorry to say, it sounds like a bad picture tube, But could be also the capacitor that filters the screen voltage on the crt drivers. In all my years though, your complaint has been the picture tube. Good Luck.
