Choosing a calibration tech - please help!

Hey Cassidy:

I have been looking into calibration since your reply the other day. Besides Best Buy for $300, I have found someone local for $115. He is a moderator on www.digitalhome.ca/forum, his user name is 57. He has numeorus good reviews. He is not ISF trained and does not do a grey scale adjustment. Below is a response he wrote to me:

Let me address your questions one at a time:

1. The poor black "rendering" of HDTVs, usually relate to a poor black level (brightness) setting, and not the greyscale.

2. The black level also interacts with the other settings on the TV, such as contrast, colour temp, picture mode, etc. When properly set, the blacks should look black and the details should be visible in the shadows (shadow detail). I can show you this when I'm doing the optimization.

3. The important thing for HDTVs is to take them off the default torch mode, to properly adjust Contrast, Brightness, Colour, Tint, Sharpness, Colour Temperature, and various automatic settings. All of these are accessed in the user menu.

4. I have done hundreds of different HDTVs and the items adjusted are basically the same, with only the location in the user menu being different. As you can see from my references, the results have been good.

5. The sencor sensor that I use is the same one used by an ISF technician, however, instead of using a signal generator, which costs thousands of dollars, I use a test DVD and your DVD player. This actually has the advantage of optimizing the DVD player exactly.

6. The ISF technician goes into the service menu and adjusts the greyscale - this can have a minor effect on the final picture quality if the colour temperature of your TV is "way off", however, most HDTVs have a colour temperature that is more than adequate when properly chosen (by me).

7. The ISF technician will charge $250-500 for his service, while I charge around $100. The ISF technician will only do the TV.

8. I optimize all of the equipment in the Home Theatre, not just the TV. See the following link:

http://www.digitalhome.ca/content/view/2883/283/

Optimizing the other equipment can be as, or more important, tham doing the TV, because if the correct signals are not sent from the STB, DVD player or the AVR is not set up or connected properly, then your entire system is not optimized.

I hope I have adequately addressed your questions.

Cassidy - I trust your opinion - do you think it is ok to go with this guy? he is a fraction of the price. Or I am getting what you pay for? How crucial is grey scale adjustement and what about what he states about that. Many people rave about his services if you read the posts.

Please let me know.

Thanks!!!

Black levels in lcd depend 99% on the technology used lg uses ips panels well sammy and sony use the latter thats why they get a tad better blacks but ips generally do colors better and the fact that th lg we have, has the all new 10 bit panels in them i myself like the pop of the lgs color over the barley there difference of blacks between it, sony and sammy, my honest opinion and let me reiterate my own opinion well lets put it like this my friend this is honestly the best way to describe greyscale, its like a painters canvas while its not as close to accurate as possible well the colors will not be as close to accurate as possible the greyscale is the starting point period this guy adjust while you watch then when ur mind is tricked into liking it well hes done kinda con but not a 100 % i mean he shows up atleast greyscaling and well isf ccc is an art and a science ur tv is able to hold ruler straight scale from 10 to 100 man like i said earlier this guy will only give half the pie, save ur money, and after x-mas treat ur self i promise u wont be sorry i am loving mine and well its hard for a tv to impress me but this lg well i cant quit playing with Hey the response time in cinema mode is 2.7 seconds wow, and leave fresh contrast off that equals 40,000 dynamic contrast now that is torch mode, hey intelligent sensor can save u 65% thats alot, did u get extended warranty.

Wooden Blocks Toys problems

When first choosing a toy for a child, it is best to determine if the toy is age appropriate. The toy packaging usually has age recommendations. Companies take the time to research and test their toys before they put them out on the market. It is always best to monitor your child, especially a toddler, with any toy. Kids seem to have the knack for finding a weak spot with things whether they want to or not. Best rule of thumb is if a toy is smaller than the palm of your childs hand or if it can fit in their mouth, don't let them play with it. Children are special gifts. Let's protect them at all costs. Good luck.

well u can run test patterns and maybe see if theres any stuck or dead pixels u can auto test, you can set default color rgb respectively, u can change model info which just shows you the sharp makes the 52 inch 10 bit panels and some vizitio or something makes the 42-47 models hey i would wait till u get the money man i mean my expert settings are dead on on my monitor but like i said they most likely are not calibrated 100% identical, im from us u ur from canada so yeah they might not be perfect on ur tv but i gurantee they are pretty close and most people could live with them indefinatley but i would suggest getting it calibrated it doesnt matter when treat it like a surprise be content with current settings then set a goal of getting calibrated per ur tv hell itll be like christmas when u get it recalibrated even if u dont see a huge difference ur mind will make u believe otherwise. ur tv has the option to be 10 point calibrated use it it within itsself is a rarity plus hown damn close you can get them running straight and all the way from 10 to 100 that is good and i gurantee u whoever calibrates ur tv will respect that lg fan or not.

Follow up question on black level

i have 6year old son 4 year old son and 3 year old daughter you might play around with black level and gamma switching in between. I would go ahead and get it calibrated, well they will lock in the day and night feature on the expert1 and 2 that way it cant be changed i would have them set it to ur hdmi output to ur bluray player thats just me and then put the same specs out for ur hd tv settings on ur own just copy them and well sd use intelligent sensor thats what i do the i sensor does pretty well for the sd signals. no the black level is not grand but really black levels are overrated unless u work for cnet and yes they biased i dont care what the nay sayers say they gave the lg60 not such a good review, their plasma biased. plasmas are nice especially pioneer, but i like the punch of lcds, and i hate having to becareful about this and that with plasmas.

ISF

Hello Dan, My name is Cassidy and no im a male, my parents must have liked grateful dead or ***** cassidy no seriously though, i would definitely go with best buy, dont get me wrong they can tie their shoes, i guess i was being biased honestly now that i think about it let me retract my previous reply best buy geek squad honestly i think they would be a good pick they wont be the electronic illiterate kids you find selling stuff in the store atleast i would hope not no but if you think about it best buy is gonna spend money to train their geeks well one because they have it, no im not isf certified but one of my best friends is, i sound like alot of the guys on avs forum with my earlier best buy bashing, i would say call them get some info on gurantees,(if any honestly i dont know with them) let them come and ask the kid some general questions and watch all the way from 10 up to 100 when hes running and adjusting the scale youll know if he knows oh and when he gets there ask him how do you access the service menu the answer is hold menu on the remote while holding menu on tv password prompt will appear and here is the million dollar question whats the default password well ur the lucky guy its 0000 honestly there is alot of people out there stumped over that one go into ur menu regular menu and go to the password screen it will ask for ur password hit0000 then you can set ur own 4 number password theres alot of people on avs forum that cant figure that out, lol learning is 75 percent of the fun atleast to me, oh AND WHEN THAT sorry caps was on when the geek squads there ask him questions any that you want if hes like me you wont be able to get rid of him because i believe ur job should be ur passion, well theoretically. 300 for 2 inputs is standard but the way the economy is well isf guys gotta eat.. This is a good set i took back a pz85 panny plasma for this tv if that says anything well the panny plasmas have way to much noise must still be using (genesis)faroudja processors, the lg on the other hand has a awesome processor very smooth hd and sd. i wonder which processor it uses huh theres my next adventure maybe if i get my kids to bed early enough lol.

best buy- yes my calibrations are good i wouldnt give you bad ones i give you my word i know you dont know but trust me principles are very important atleast to me, but all tvs differentiate somewhat tv from tv and yes the same model because the greyscale is set at the end of manufacturing. 400 for one input is way to much way to much.

http://www.imagingscience.com/ isf certified is the only people i will let touch my tvs, my best friend calibrates all my stuff and yes hes isf calibrated the funny thing i actually know more than him, but hey i let him shine why not hes my friend, but yeah go to this site and put in your zip or city sorry its been a while since ive been here, best buy no offense but i wouldnt let those kids plug in my tv, well im only 28 so i guess if not actually the old wise but sorry to get to the point yes now some bestbuys claim to have isf certified reps but i would go with the guys that have been doing it for ever. all should be able to run a grey scale i am running one on my z4 right now actually, plus 300 is kinda high call a isf tech let him come over and see ur isf ccc able tv and he will smile the only thing about the lg70 that could have been better would have been the feature that would have in abled you to adjust the intensity in the color managment oh well still an excellent excellent tv, yeah not the greatest blacks but hey blacks are not even technically a color, but as i am a videophile through and through i am very very happy with this set. sorry for all the extra jumbo.

let me know if you need anyother help but my settings are running straight as a ruler all the way up to 100 pretty damn close to 6500 10- 100, thats very very rare even for broadcast monitors specs.

Projection tv problem lens

Good Day;
Hey, Thomas;
As you stated very few companies provide the rubber seals.
The best thing to use is silicon, place it where the seal is. Remove the CRT from the unit, drain the fluid, clean area, replace with Ethylene Glycol. Make sure you let the silicon to set up, about 24 hours.
Good Luck, Day, Big Irish.
ps call if problem at [email protected].
