Amana BX22A2W - freezer works, fridge not cooling

Good Day:

I own Amana model number BX22A2W.

Amana refrigerator with bottom freezer - Freezer works, no air circulation to refrigerator compartment. Compressor and condenser fan run. Freezer is cold, and evaporator fan runs in the freezer compartment, but no flow into the refrigerator. There is no frost on the unit. What should I do next?

- Thank you

how do you open / close it? it just looks like this big plastic thing in the back and i cant get anything on it to move?

  • hotdob Jan 20, 2009

Pretty much the same here but in the freezer compartment there is ice buildup behind the back panel. If you push on the back wall/panel you can feel and hear the ice as it squashes.

The fan was replaced just a few months ago. Sounds like it's working but nothing going up to the fridge.

Could you tell me where the evaporator is

Check the damper in the top back of the fresh food section. make sure that it is open and air is coming through it.

The cover just pops off to expose the damper. This is a thermostat controlled damper. As the temperature gets warmer it will open wider. If its not opening then it will need to be replaced. If its open but you can't feel much if any air through it then you should check to see if there is excess frost on the evaporator blocking airflow. If the is a frost build up then you have a defrost problem which could be in either the defrost timer or defrost thermostat.

Impatience appears to be my problem. It looks like it had to go through a couple of cooling cycles before it started pumping cool air to the fridge. Am I right about this or should I still be checking other things? I have cool air now going to the fridge.

I have an amana fridge model # arb190rcw.nothing remains frozen in the freezer.and i have noticed ice on the back wall of the freezer compartment

Your cooling coils have frosted so much that there is ice forming allover the cooling coils and preventing the actual cooling inthe fridge. First of all shut off the fridge for about 10 hours and wait for all the ice to defrost. Clean up your fridge well and then check inside of the freezer compartment for break in wiring, failure of the heater or the thermostat. Now put the fridge on and see if the cooling comes back.If the set works ok then dont worry till you experience the same fault coming back. In this case your auto defrost timer could be faulty as it is not doing the 8 hours cycle defrosting. Check this out test and replace . Get help if you are not familiar. good day

Amana,BX22A2W Freezer works, on bottom, Fridge is not cooling, no fan.

This is a common problem and most of the time it is one of two things. Ice can build up stopping the fan or the fan is bad. Before changing the fan unplug your unit over night and let it defrost to make sure that ice is not the problem. If the fan works after that then also check that the defrost timer is not bad, which could be the reason that you have ice build up. If your fan still does not work and manual defrost then replace the fan.
I hope that this will help you to solve your problem.

Fridge wasn't cooling but freezer was working, now both aren't

Hi,Your husband did good job, after cleaning and vacuuming, did freezer (bottom) have excessive ice?, if there's excessive ice in bottom, after cleaning, you have a defrost problem, but if there're no ice in freezer after cleaning, you got freon (gas leak) , there's a condensate loop, that passes through ref. body, from compressor that naturally develop, freon leak after few years, by rusting, normally it can be by- pass. vacuum and refill with freon, if there's no freezing, but compressor running, you'll need a mechanic, you got a freon leak. good luck.

Amana BX22A2W - freezer works, fridge not cooling

Same problem here with an Amana refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom. I removed the back panels and vacuumed dust and cat hair out. The back panel in the freezer was frosted over with ice on the bottom. I removed the shelves and food and used a hairdryer to loosen the panel. The ice maker made it harder to remove the plastic panel so I pulled it back and saw the cooling fins frozen solid. I used the hairdryer to melt the ice and a shop vacuum to collect the water. It works like new again.
