Panasonic DMR-ES25 Trouble setting up to record TV shows
We previously had DirecTv with DVR, so we never had a need to use the recording feature. Now, DirecTv has been cancelled and we want to record our TV shows to watch later. The DVDr does not rwcognize any channels when it scans for them. I have read & re-read the manual's set-up instructions and tried probably 12-13 times with no success. I even did a hard reset if the unit and started over from scratch. I know for a fact that the antenna signal IS going to/through the unit because, when I turn it off, I can still watch all the channels on my TV, so the antenna signal is going to the DVDr and then out to TV. Every time I get to the point in set-up where it asks for "Recording Source", I select "Internal Tuner", and the unit then proceeds to "scan for channels automatically" and comes up empty ("No channels found") every time. Antenna signal is fine--TV gets 16-18+ digital OTA channels.
Also, what Input do I use (if I ever get it working) when recording TV?
Re: Panasonic DMR-ES25 Trouble setting up to record TV...
The DMR-ES25 does not have an ATSC tuner; it has an NTSC tuner. See page 54 (Specifications) of the manual at the bottom of the left column (television system). You need to add digital to analog (ATSC to NTSC) OTA converter box between the antenna and the DVD recorder. Next, you will set the converter box to the channel you wish to record and set the DVD recorder to record on a composite input (Line in) or channel 3/4 depending on how you set up the converter box.
The only remaining analog broadcasts are a few low-power stations. Unless you live close to one of these transmitters, your DMR-ES25 will not be able to tune in any channels. Make sure that you find a converter box with composite and/or RF out if you wish to use the DVD recorder. There are some currently available ATSC tuners that have built-in DVR capabilities. These might also work for you. However, many of the cheap units fail quickly.
Hook up the cable wire that comes directly from the wall to the dvd recorder's in connection, then get a 3 ft cable cord and connect from the out of the dvd recorder to the in on the tv. You should be able to set the dvd recorder channel and timer and leave it off. you then should be able to have your tv on and watch any station but to watch the tv with dvd recorder on, your tv should be set to either channel 3 or 4 depending on the switch on back of dvd recorder. I hope this solves your problem. Foxpaw13

Hi abrooks...Clicking on the following URL will take you directly to the Acceptance Page that will allow you to download the proper update applicable to your Unit and Issue. Applying this update to your player will provide your resolution....good luck my friend
http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vDownloadsTermsConditions?storeId=15001&fileName=DMR-ES25/DMR-ES25.EXE
The following are details of the file that you will be downloading;
Version: IR-01
Last Updated: 5/2/2006
Description: This version restores IR Remote operation if the unit has stopped responding. After this update has been installed, please be sure to disconnect the unit from AC power for a minimum of 30 seconds.
I suggest you run through the set up procedures for your DVR, just as if it is a new installation. Among other steps you will need to reset the time (reset the clock.)
I am unfamiliar with this unit. If you have scart connecters on both, connect av2 on the tv to av in on the recorder. set the recorder to record from av source. You should now record a program, I think the static is the fact that composite is out from the dvd only, not an input, and in on the tv, not an output.
I made my Panasonic DMR-ES25
Player/Recorder Multi Region successfully by following the instructions
"Sending the IR code with a PocketPC" from this site:
I have been able to record down converted HDTV shows on my Panasonic
DMR-EH50 recorder directly to the unit's hard drive and/or directly to
a blank DVD-R disc.
I do not know of any DTV converter box that can provide the proper
codes to the Panasonic DMR-EH50 to allow recording and scheduling of
shows using the unit's built in TV Guide menuing functions (the program recording codes
are essentially VCR Plus codes in the USA and VCR Video codes in the
UK, and this technology was previously owned by TV Guide/Gemstar but
was purchased by Macrovision within the past couple of years.)
When the DMR-EH50 is hooked up to standard RG-59/U coaxial TV cable,
the cable company provides the specific VCR Plus recording codes, as
well as auto setting the time and date information required for the TV
Guide recording schedule menus. The VCR Plus recording codes are sent
via the cable company through the coaxial cable to the end consumer's
recording
device. Since Gemstar's VCR-Plus patents are now owned by Macrovision,
I am not sure of how this works (or will work) for
non-cable/non-satellite customers or if such codes will be made
available by Macrovision to record shows when one receives HDTV signals
(or down converted DTV signals) from an over-the-air antenna.
Though the DMR-EH50 recorder can only record at Standard Definition
(SD) broadcast resolutions, I connect the DMR-EH50 to my High
Definition TV using the three progressive scan YPBPR output cables and switch my HD-TV into the YPBPR mode when I want to watch shows from the DMR-EH50.
YPBPR are the analog video signals carried by three color coded component video cables. The green cable carries the Y
signal; the blue cable carries the PB signal; and the red cable carries the PR signal. The added benefit of using the YPBPR
hookup is that you can 'up convert' a standard DVD disc (non HD Blu-Ray
disc) in progressive scan mode to somethin akin to 720p resolution using the DM-EH50 (or
any other progressive scan DVD player) to get a better quality image on
your HD-TV.
Visually speaking, the same appears to hold true for playback of
programs recorded on the DMR-EH50's hard drive even though down
converted via the DTV converter box, and when played back on an HD-TV
using the YPBPR progressive scan cabling hookup.
I also been able to successfully record programs from the DTV converter
box to the DMR-EH50 recorder in both 16:9 wide screen and 4:3 normal
aspect ratios, but again only in Standard Definition quality.
For NTSC and PAL formats, the correct aspect ratios for any particular
TV (the rectangular height and width of your output resolution for a TV
screen) can usually be setup correctly for most any DTV converter box
by going carefully through the menus on the converter box. Though the
converted DTV often will yield 'better looking TV' than cable, it's
certainly not high definition however, as the purpose of any DTV
converter box is * not * to yield a High Definition digital TV signal
but a lower quality
Standard Definition signal for viewing on older SD-TVs.
We must remember that what is happening here is that (by NTSC USA standards), we are transcoding
(i.e., down converting) an over the air 1920 x 1080p (progressive scan)
High Definition digital broadcast signal, captured by your over the air
antenna, back to a Standard Definition 720 x 480 resolution analog
broadcast signal (the 720 x 480 resolution is a 4:3 aspect ratio.)
dear sir i have panasonics dmr-e85h dvd recorder .
so i connect to emerson evc 1595 pal to ntsc to pal video convertor.and i convertor to pal video to ntsc video. but it colity is very bed. and picture is fickaring. so u solve my problems emidently.and some time dvdr- is not supprot to display.
DVRs have embedded digital rights functionality to prevent you from doing what you are try to do. In addition the VCR has logic to respond to that and prevent recording by blocking the signal.
