Hi I have a Compaq Presario 5000 and it will not switch on - when I press the power switch a red light flashes and nothing happens - any ideas?
How I solve this issue of a customer of mine.
replaced power supply and one memory stick was faulty
lesson learned: check the obvious first.. .Powersupply.. if problems persists... check your ram... if you have 2 sticks of ram,, try reseating and using one at a time or swap with known good memory.
This could be the mem module contact problem,if your pc using 2 module, try to remove one out, also re-insert the other ( take out and insert in again ).
This will require a bit of troubleshooting. It could be the power supply is faulty, in which case you should try testing your machine with a different power supply to see if it will boot. It could also be the motherboard. Also, it's possible it could be either the CPU is bad or that the fan isn't properly seating on the cpu or that you simply need to reapply some thermal compound on the cpu. If you don't have any extra parts to do some tests, see if you can get a friend to lend parts or have a tech-savvy friend help you out.
I have this same problem with a pc my brother gave me. My Pc just shuts down in the middle of games and then the red light flashes and I am not able to start it.
However, I have found that if I just unplug the power cord from the power supply for a min or less, it turns right on again.
Hope this works for you. Saves you trouble of going inside the case.
Power supply may need to be replaced but this is too much of an intermittent issue to replace in my opinion.
Just change the cmos battery and check memory positions
I've had these sort of problems when a cooling fan in the computer is going bad.
Unplug the power from your computer and crack the case. Unplug the power supply from the board. Then plug it back up and try it again sometimes this resets it and it will start again. But it didn't happen by chance there was a reason and something is going out in your computer. Itcan be alot of different things. Pull them out one by one and you may be able to aliminate the problem. When you find the bad part replace it with a new one and your up and running again.
The following article gives an extensive look at trouble shooting power supply issues on HP & Compaq PCs. I was going on the assumption that this was the light you were referring to. Give them a shot. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=376064&lang=en&docname=bph06788 Compaq Presario 5000 is quite an extensive line, and contains both laptops and PCs. I hope PC was what you were looking for.
Plse try to replace power supply.
Check the switch, a hp will do the same thing, try another on and off switch
Here's another thing that as far out as sounds, works for me. Take a hair dryer and turn it on blowing the air on back of tower where the fan is. In a minute or so. Light turns solid and will power up. Works for me anyways.
Thanks for everyone who answered my query.
Fortunately I have fixed the problem and am using the
machine day and night (“self employed”) now.
On one hand, I did reach a point that the power supply light
flashing eventually stops if I unplug the last main mother board cable. Then I
plug in the cable, very carefully, the flashing was not starting (a good sign
for me).
On the other hand, I have thoroughly checked all the connections
and contacts, reaffirmed them. I also found one small cable which was not
connecting correctly (did not know why there was no problem).
After these two “methods”, the machine suddenly started
working as usual . I assume the machine now should withstand a power turn-off
but I do not dare to do that yet.

One another occasion, my daughter’s Sony notebook suddenly
stopped working one day (does not power on). I also tried my best – searching for
service manuals and opened the machine up and confirmed the switch is good but failed
to go any further (no service manual and also I am not that good). While I was
making my mind up to repair the machine (it costs about 1/3 of a new notebook’s
price). One day, I just got this idea I need to smash the notebook (suppose it is
a contact problem). So I simply hit the machine with my palm, solidly but in
sort of control, on two sides. And then suddenly, the power-on starts working
again. Really amazing! It has been working for quite a few months now.

I had the same problem on my HP t350.uk machine but with different
symptom. But later on, the machine occasionally ran into a freezing
state, not responding to any input. So a
few days ago, I turned off the machine, and did some connection checking on the
motherboard. But this time, the flashing never stops flashing, even after I
have unplugged almost everything. The flashing stops only after I unplug the power to the
motherboard. By manipulating this power cable to the motherboard, I can manage
to turn the flashing to the constant flashing, but the machine still can’t be
turned on. I was just wondering this event sequence would inspire any
useful trouble shooting thoughts Dr Q Mei
It first appeared one year ago when my daughter switched off the machine
(everything was fine up to this point) at night. The next day, the machine
could not be started but she noticed the machine's power supply light was
flashing. It was in this state for a few hours as she does not know what to do.
Then suddenly the flashing stopped and machine can be started and everything returned
to normal.
Then about half a year ago, I turned off the machine to add some
memory (from 512mb to 1.5gb) and could not start the machine while the
power supply light was flashing. My daughter told me the trick but it did not
work after a few hours. So I left the machine connected to power over night.
Next morning, the flashing was gone and everything returned to normal.
Remove the battery from the motherboard to reset your bios let it stay out 60 second and then put it back in
Having Similar Problem with Compaq d-530s. Believe it is most likely power supply.
I think it is right solution ( habib) 1st but the 2nd is very near because put out old cpu to upgrade it or change cooler may forget thermal compound
All you have to do is check all your connection from your main power plug to motherboard.Plz check your AC voltage in your area. Then unplug your power cord from power supply(SMPS) and resit your ram. If the problem still there then change your powersupply.Let me know if the problem still persists
Probably better check the power rating it could be 220v and you accidentally plug it to a 110v outlet.

Sounds like the hard drive has had a failure, you need to get a replacement one, and reinstall it, along with the opperating system, and any other programs that were on the old one.

Hi...I am facing the same problem with my PC. Last night when i was working on my PC, suddenly it got hanged and when i restarted the machine, it is not turning ON again. However, my bro has tried to start the PC, it gets start at that moment but again PC got hanged and same problem occurs, i.e it is not turning ON. When Power on the PC, only monitor power button light blinks and red light on CPU continously flashes. I have re-sitted the RAM. Isthis issue is coming due to processor overheating or RAM problem or CMOS problem. I have gone through many of the conversation in net, there can be problem of power supply, smps.
Please help as i dont want to spent lots of money for guessing only.
