I have a Toshiba 42H81 42 in. Rear Projection Television. The picture has shadows like you would watch a 3D image without glasses. I ran the focus on it and the vertical red has noise in it and at the end...

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Hooked up PS3 to system and when watching DVD's the right side of the picture is blurry and appears doubled, like an old 3D movie without the red and blue glasses. When watching TV everything looks fine.

My rca projection tv has blue and green images like a 3D picture would without your 3D glasses, a double vision image and no other colors

sounds like the sensors are out of focus and your red sensor isnt turning on. look in the back of the tv for a master reset button or in your menu screen some sort of "Flash focus" or "convergence". They will realign the 3 sensors.

tHIS is a convergence problem.. first question if you go into the customer setup menu. is the convergence option listed? If you have not got that option i suggest you read "the fl231 problem in the tips and trick section of this website. this can be a simple inexpensive repair..if you do have the convergence option then it can be one of three diffrent boards convergence power, convergence amp or small signal board. and will need further trouble shooting

Our tv is 10 years old toshiba cinema series it has blue and red

It will be 11 years next month that I've had my Toshiba 55H55 Cinema Series and have the same problem every now and then, if you haven't already done so, go to the picture settings and scrolling down to conversion and it will take you through 3 steps of adjustments, there is a white cross in the middle of the screen line up the red first and then the blue, it will then take you to a screen with numbers, ID the clearest number and exit out, you should have a clear picture again. I hope this helps.
