We've owned our Silvia for over 4 years and use it daily, but recently it's started growling and banging as part of the heating cycle. Everything else still works fine, it just noisy.

The LG is known for the main motor bearings (2 small cheap) bearings that are of poor quality and become noisy (growls) after a period of time. I pulled the motor and replaced the Korean bearings with quality German equivalents. This is cheap and solves the problem. (the front bearing closest to the plastic pump is the culprit.
The rear bearing in most front loaders lasts an average of 5 years under normal usage. Spin the drum manually with your hand and seee if it is nice and smooth and quiet. If the bearing is ok it is probable that 1 of the shocks is broken on the bottom.
Hi The solenoid valve needs back flushing the correct way with a espresso machine detergent like Cafiza, or Joe Glo. Place a 1/2 teaspoon in a blind basket. (don't come with Silvia). Place blind basket in portafilter and brew like making espresso, but run pump for no more than 5 to 10 seconds or until the pump starts to change tone (slow down). Stop the pump when either of these things happen or Silvia can be damaged. Repeat the pump 5 to 10 times leaving a 1 minute wait between cycles, or the suds comming out the 3 way valve turns pure white, with no coffee stains in the foam. Remove the portafilter and rinse then reinsert and repeat the cycles to rinse the internals. This should take care of the problem. If not you may have to replace the 3 way.
HI. here are the most common issues that will cause a noise during the wash.
* Check the spray arm for damage and obstructions * Check the inlet filter screens * Test the water inlet valve(see below for test procedure) * Check the motor and mounts- The motor may e loose or one of the mounts may have separated form the housing. this will cause mis-alignment. * Check the fan motor and blade * Check the drain for obstructions
NOTE
If all checks out above, the culprit will be a cracked pump impeller. this will occur if the drive stud becomes unstable, allowing the impeller to partially separate form the motor spin drive stud. this will cause the impeller to rub or grind during the wash cycle. If this is the case, there are impeller repair kits available for purchase that will correct this issue.
Check the Vibration damper rods to be sure that... 1. They are there and mount is solid. 2. If they are broken in 1/2. 3. The plastic knuckle mounts are not missing/broken. 4. There is oil in the shock absorber/spring section of the rods.
Also - there are suspension springs on the bottom of the tub that could be broken and/or missing.
Replace/repair as necessary.
IF THIS IS A BRAND NEW INSTALLATION - be sure you have removed the basket shipping pins (4) that secure the tub during shipping.

cozy heat exchangers do tend to make a lil more noise than avg. if its popping before the blower comes on its proubly the heat exchanger expanding. you would have to watch the exchanger while it was heating to see exactly what is causing the noise. but as a renter you should try reporting it to the landlord first and try to get a tech there before digging yourself
