I cannot connect my router to the internet

I recently switched to time warner roadrunner and have received a new modem to go along with it. I hooked up my SMCWBR14-G2 router exactly the same way it was set up to my previous modem but it does not seem to be working. I can't figure out why. The router is working, since my iPhone can pick up the wi-fi but there's no internet.

SOURCE: For SMC7904WBRA :: How to use Cable Modem on ADSL router/modem

Looks like your device does not support playing router for cable internet. Would recommend you get an actual router, or alternately if you have a computer with two network adaptors you could plug one into cable modem, plug other in to LAN side of router, then configure turn Windows Internet Connection service, will need to disable the DHCP service on the router. I highly recommend you get a real cable/dsl router to do this tho. Linksys 54g series has been one of my favorites. SOURCE: Using Wireless + PPPoE at the same time kills router. SMCWBR14-G2

Hi,
From your description, I am assuming you have a direct ethernet connection from an RJ45 connection in a jack in the wall. If this is the case, then you would just need to purchase a wireless router (linksys, D-link, netgear, etc). Connect the ethernet connection from the wall to the routers internet or WAN port. You will need to access the routers firmware configuration and set it to connect with PPPoE, so get your username and password from your ISP if you are not sure what it is.

You will be able to continue to have the PC plugged into the router with an ethernet cable, and then run the laptop with a wireless connection, just be sure to configure the laptop with the security key if applicable.

If you were using a software PPPoE connection on your PC, quit using it. Just set your network adapters on both computers to DHCP, and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps

SOURCE: I use Wireless router Model:

We have used gtalk with static ip number. Sounds more like the port it uses isn't open. It could be that they block the port at your office. When using static ip numbers the gateway must be the number of the router in order for it to get out to the internet.

Well, once reset you will need to login to the interface and resetup all the connection information. You can do that from the WEB interface just logon and reset. No special software (except a web browser) is needed.
I think the SMC default address is http://192.168.2.1 just log on and set it up. Resetting just restores the factory defaults, it does not erase the system.

Rarely does a router need software on a computer. Even the linksys that have a big sticker USE CD FIRST -- its only there for those who don't understand routers!

Modem light keeps blinking Have tried resetting. Restoring to default settings. If I hook the computer directly to the time warner modem I can acces the internet fine. Thanks

If the modem light keeps blinking, it means that the router hasn't been configured yet. Also, rarely, it can be an issue with WAN port/modem port on the router or the ethernet cable connecting the modem to router or finally, modem may not be working as its not applicable in this case(as you said).
How to configure the router for Time Warner?
1.Connect comp.--(gray port) router (yellow port)--modem
2.On the computer, open the router page by typing 192.168.2.1 in the address bar of browser
3.Under Internet Settings, change the connection type as Dynamic.
4.On the far left column, click on "MAC address" under Internet WAN.
5.Click on clone and apply changes and finally check Internet status
6.If internet status > Not connected, we need to do a network power cycle
7.For this, unplug the power from router, then from modem, then unplug the coaxial cable from cable modem.
8. Wait for 10 sec, then connect the coaxial cable, then connect power to modem, wait for lights on modem to get steady, then finally, plug in the power to router.
Now, you may see proper lights lit on the router.
All my best wishes for a fast internet service through the router.

For any advanced help, revert asap!
Thanks and regards,
Arvind

Router Won't connect to internet

The cable modem sometimes register the hardware MAC address of the connected device. So your PC may be registered and it won't accept the router now. Connect the WAN port of the router to your cable modem and power the modem off and on again. It should re-register the connected device and now your router should work.

I have Time Warner Cable for internet and Vontage cable for my phone thru my internet. I'm trying to connect a Linksys router for my wireless laptop. I also have a Netgear switch connected to Time Warner...

If you purchased a Linksys wireless roter then you shoul not need the switch anymore-
Try going directly from your time warner modem into the Interner/WAN port on the router and then plug your desktop computer and the vontage phone system into 2 of the ports on the router. After everything is hooked up you will probably need to power cycle for it all to work correctly.
Please power cycle in this order:

Reboot modem - then Router- then Vontage phone system.

Hope this helps
