Problem with seeing files on external Hard drive

I have an external harddrive that i use to store my music on, I had it plug in to my laptop one evening there was a power failure and the power got cut to the external HD since this it is showing in its properties tab that there is 13 gigs used space and 237 gigs free space on the HD but there is no more sign of my backed up music. When I scan the hard drive it shows a couple of files but there combined used space would only amount to about 60 mbs and no where near the 13 gigs. Does any one have any suggestions on how i would go about retrieving my muisc.

Plus when the hard drive is plug in to the laptop a window appears saying "unable to run toy.exe" and I have to open the external HD by right clicking and selecting open as it will not automatically open up. The hard drive is a 250gig seagate free agent go.

What has happened is that your file system on the hard drive became corrupt becasue windows had not updated the MFT on the drive. THe MFT is a table of contents regarding whats on your drive.

What happened is similar to someone cutting out a few pages of the table of contents in a book that has a lot of pages.

Windows tried to fix this stupid programming method by asking people to always use the "safely remove hardware" button in the taskbar to force it to update the MFT.
In this case yur a victim of the Hard Discs MFT not updating properly probably because software was accessing the drive when it was disconnected from the machine.

You need to run chkdsk to have it rebuild your MFT.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 <-- How to perform Check disk
*NOTE: Remember to use the drive letter that the USB External is on.. Not just type CHKDSK. It will default to drive C to scan for errors. ex: c:\chkdsk g: (where g is the drive your external usb is)
If you get an error like "CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.. see my notes below.
Beware that it will take a LONG TIME to perform this procedure.

If this doesn't fix it.. contact a data recovery specialist.. It's worth the cost. There are two types. Simple and Advanced.
Simple= recovering files your deleted with the delete button (fairly easy with the right software)
Advanced = recovering files from a hard disk crash or file system corruption. (Not easy and very time consuming)

Trying to transfer data from an old harddrive i have (maxtor, diamondmax plus 9 80 GB ATA / 133 HDD) to My HP laptop

Install the hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case the plug this USB hard drive into the USB port in your laptop. The laptop will see it as an external storage device, open the various folders and copy the files to your laptop.
You can delete any unwanted files off this external USB hard disk and use it for backups and file transfer.

Lacie External Drive won't turn on (blue Light doesn't go on)

Inside the LaCie D2 250GB (300770) external harddrive's case, is a 250GB IDE (PATA) harddrive that is 3.5 inches across in width.

A desktop computer sized harddrive. (May be a Western Digital WD25000JB)

The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board, (Bridge board), and the circuit board has a USB port on it.

Using this Western Digital Passport for an example,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/misc/picture/?src=/images/storage/wd-passport-250gb/p3.jpg&1=1

Scroll down to the second photo, and left-click on it. The case of the external harddrive is shown open.
Inside is a 2.5 inch laptop sized harddrive.
An aluminum tape strip covers the small circuit board, attached at the back of the harddrive.

The second photo down on this page, shows you the small interface circuit board, that the harddrive plugs into, with the aluminum tape removed.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/wd-passport-250gb_2.html

(Another design has wires coming from the small circuit board, to an interface the harddrive plugs into )

It is this small circuit board that goes bad in a LaCie. QUITE common.

Solution?

Simple.
1) Obtain a 3.5 inch IDE external enclosure
2) Remove the 3.5 IDE harddrive from the LaCie's case.
3) Install the harddrive out of the LaCie into the external 3.5 IDE enclosure.

An example of a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

How do I use my WD hard drive to store files so I can free up space on my laptop hard drive?

Hi:
That's an easy task:
1) Plug your Hd to your laptop and wait until the laptop recognize it as a new drive and assign a new letter to it. If you have a disc use it if your laptop ask for it.
2) Copy all files you want to transfer to the new HD and paste them on it.
That's it.

My laptop isn't picking up my external harddrive anymore? There is nothing wrong with it's power supply and usually it comes up immediately. How do I test whether the harddrive is still working?

Hi,

you have to try it out on another pc, plug it in the USB port and watch if there is any autoplay or so. If so, then it has most probably to do with the registry keys.
Please specify your operating system (XP, Vista, Windows 7,...)

if you want to safely unplug and carry the HD over to another computer, you can., the files should be accessible... that's all a harddive does.

Ipod music is gone, but still says it has stuff on it

If you do this through itunes, it should be okay. The trouble is everytime you want to update your ipod, you will need to connect it with itunes and itunes will need to have your existing library that you created for you ipod to perform a quick and troublefree update.

If you are going to get an external harddrive you will need to re-direct where itunes is saving your music and video files. Because itunes will be using your internal harddrive for the system files (that is where windows is), it will automatically save the music to your internal drive. I suggest reloding an updated version of itunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/ here and when asked where to install it, redirect it from C:programfiles.......to your external harddrive. This way the itunes music folder will be on your external harddrive.

Hope this helps
