Beaters don't reach the bottom of the bowl

Over the years I have noticed that when I use this mixer the beaters no longer reach the bottom of my bowl. I usually have to manually lift the bowl from below so all of the contents are mixed. Is there a way to adjust the height of the mechanism that raises the bowl?
Thank you,
Megan

My bowl doesn't meet up with my mixing attachments, especially the whisker for making meringue or beating butter with sugar. You need it to reach the bottom! So I have to manually take it out and do it by hand, in another bowl. I've tried lifting up the bowl to meet the mixer but it makes a horrible noise and still doesn't quite work. Can you move the whole thing somehow to go together better?

There is an adjuster on the model I own - the KSM50... It is a tiny little silver screw at the base of the motor between the screws that mount the bowl mover to the stand. Screwing to the left makes the bowl lower and turning to the right makes the bowl higher. I just adjusted mine. Note - just a slight turn can make a difference, but my screw was SO TIGHT- I had to ask my husband to do it. Plus, it is located in a difficult area for some screwdrivers to fit into. He got mine to budge and now my clearance of beater to bowl ratio is perfect.

:) Hope it works for ya,

There is no adjustment for the lift hieght of the bowl, but I found that putting a washer on the pins to either side will lift the bowl just enough so that the beater is closed to the bottom. You do not want it to hit since that will rub the metal and wear out your parts faster.

Beater on Kitchen Aid stand mixer doesn't touch bottom of bowl

Why would you raise the beater if you want it to reach the bottom of the bowl? You need to lower the beater. Turn the screw in until it just touches with empty bowl on high speed then turn it counter clockwise a 1/4 turn so it will just clear.

The paddle on my mixer runs too low and hits the bottom of the bowl. any ideas?

Hi ERIN. This should be pretty easy to do by yourself. The instructions for adjusting your beater to bowl clearance is in your Owners Manual. If you don’t have the original manual you can easily download a PDF version of your Owners Manual from the KA website: (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home).
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, in your case K$45SSW and select the file listed for your model that appears under Owners Manuals (2): K45SSWH-0.pdf (2730.37 KB) and save that file to your PC. Turn to Page 13 and you will find the instructions for adjusting the mixer head height. I have extracted the instructions below:
Beater to Bowl Clearance
Your mixer is adjusted at the factory so that the flat beater just clears the bottom of the bowl. If for any reason, the flat beater hits the bottom of the bowl or is too far away from the bowl, clearance

Tilt-Head models
• Unplug mixer.
• Lift motor head.
3898bd2.jpg
• Turn screw (A) SLIGHTLY counter clockwise (left) to raise flat beater or clockwise (right) to lower flat beater.
• Make adjustment with flat beater, so it just clears surface of bowl.
If you over adjust the screw, the bowl lock lever may not lock into place.

Can you lengthen the beater by loosing a screw?

Hi, KLOEHR, your beater will not lengthen by losing a screw. However, if you lost your Beater to Bowl Clearance adjustment screw, then it might appear that your beater had ‘grown’ because now the beater may be touching the bottom of your mixing bowl, where previously it had not. Simply said, the beater didn’t grow the mixer head drooped.

Mixer component vibrates; seems to sit too low; beaters rub against bowl; alignment seems wrong

Professional 600 - makes loud noise when mixing, often stops as it blends 8 cups of bread flour and "needs a break", flat beater seems to get caught on bottom of bowl - this mixer is 1 yr. old!!

Several things:

The Professional 600 has a metal gear housing with a metal gearing. Because of this, the Professional 600 will generally run louder than other stand mixers that may have a nylon/metal mesh gearing.

How long is the bread dough being mixed for? Kitchenaid stand mixers must be used on speed 2 for bread doughs, using the spiral shaped dough hook, and mixing for no longer than 7 minutes.

If the flat beater is getting caught on the bottom of the bowl, pleasure assure the bowl is being seated correctly. You will place the bowl on the mixer arms on the left and right hand side. You will also want to take your fingers along the back of the bowl, where it butts up against the base of the mixer, and press downward. You will hear an audible click as the bowl falls into a spring latch and allows the bowl to sit flush and secure. If this is not being done, the flat beater may strike the bottom of the bowl.

If this was not the cause of the problem, please consult your Use and Care Guide about the beater to bowl adjustment. This is an easy adjustment made with a flat head screwdriver that can quickly correct the problem of a flat beater hitting the bottom of the bowl.

Kitchenaid beater rubs bottom of the bowl

Your beater to bowl clearance has come out of alignment. This can happen naturally over time and with normal use of the appliance. This is something you may correct from home using a flathead screwdriver.

Unplug the mixer, with the bowl and flat beater removed. Tilt the mixing head back as far as the machine will allow. In the exposed hinge, behind where the bowl would normally sit, you will see a 3/8 screw exposed. Turn this screw half a turn counterclockwise (to your left) in order to raise the flat beater from the bottom of the bowl.

This may take a few attempts until the beater is clearing the bottom of the bowl again. If the adjustment screw will no longer turn, do not force it. It is only designed to move so far to make the appropriate adjustment.

Be cautious. Raising the flat beater too high may leave dry ingredients at the bottom of the bowl.

If further information is needed, I would advise you to contact Kitchenaid Customer Service. They may walk through this adjustment through you over the phone and can look into ordering replacement beaters for you also.

Their toll-free telephone number is 1-800-541-6390.
