My canon rebel T3 was borrowed from co-workers and now the focus isn't working correctly. It can take a picture okay from far away but anything close-up or detailed is blurry and will not allow me to adjust. Secondly, the lens is also difficult to turn to focus in manual mode. It sounds like the camera is trying to adjust itself to focus, but just can't...any helpers?

I had this problem awhile ago - you must have accidently adjusted the focal area - it is sooooo easy to do without realising it. Here is what I was told:
**************************
Most likely, you have changed the AF point, which only takes effect in the creative modes (Manual, Av, Tv, P, etc)
There should be a button on your camera that has a grid like pattern above it, like
-
- - - - -
-
or
so. press that, look through the viewfinder, and move the shutter or
rear wheel, you should see the different AF points like up in red, and
as you turn different ones will light up, and eventually all of them.
also, you can look on the screen on top (or back, if its a rebel) and
it will show you which ones are selected while in that mode, instead of
looking through the viewfinder.

I just checked out the canon website, there is a link there regarding the CCD image sensory advisory. They are aware of the problem of all of a sudden getting a blurry picture and will fix it for free. Just call the toll free number on the site and they will send you a free mailing label and tell you what to do. They said it will take 10 days to fix, buy hey it's free.

That's a big lens and for sports photography you are going to need a lot of light to ensure you can use a fast shutter speed to capture the action. Sports mode may do too much for you and you might want to try switching to a more manual mode. Try switching to Tv mode which gives shutter speed priority. Set the shutter speed to something around 1/150 or higher (1/200) which should be fast enough to freeze the action. Make sure the ISO is set to 200 or 400 for best results and see how you get on. This should stop any action based blur which would leave you with focus problems if the pictures are still blurry. In the manual mode, you have to set the focus (distance to subject), aperture and shutter speed. Did you set all of them before you shot the picture?
