I have a GE 8000 BTU portable AC unit. On occasion, when turning the unit on into cool mode, the fan and all work fine but when the compressor tries to turn on, it fails, then tries again about 30 seconds later and usually goes on on the second try, though today it took 3 tries (went on on the third try). Once on, it stays on with no issues. It doesnt happen everytime I turn it on, in fact it only seems to happen once in awhile. On occasion, the compressor makes a loud sound when starting as well. And the floor around the unit always vibrates when its running, though it is being used in a mobile home. My biggest question, exactly whats wrong with it and how long will the unit last until it completely goes, and is it worth it to fix? Thanks.
It could be a voltage problem. Are you using an extension cord, If you are what gauge is it? It should be at least 14 gauge. If the cord is 16 gauge you could have to much voltage drop at start up. Or you could have something else on the same breaker, when it is running and the compressor tries to start your voltage may drop considerably.and the compressor won't start.

I would say that if it starts cooling when it's turned on, then it has freon in it. Sounds more like it's kicking off on high head pressure, meaning the condenser is not getting cooled, head pressure builds up then a safety limit switch shuts it down to save the compressor from burning out.. Is there a condenser fan maybe not operating? or are the condenser coils clogged up with dirt?
Testimonial: "I will double check the coils, but it appears they are clean. I am not sure about the fan and don't really know how to check it. Thanks, Bill"
