When you uninstalled AVG did you use the AVG uninstall or did you use Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs? Sounds like you installed the AVG Security Suite instead of the AVG Antivirus Free. Go to Control Panel - Open "Programs and Features" and you should see the program listed there. Right click the program and choose Uninstall. Once uninstalled, restart your computer, download AVG Antivirus Free and install it.
SPEAKING WITH MY EXPERIENCE: Either try Security Essentials from Microsoft OR Avast. There’s free software out there to try.

FREE SPYWARE Download Spybot Search & Destroy. Restart computer, then run Spybot to see what spyware comes up, AND DELET IT.
FYI---Virus Protection-- 2 programs of virus protection will conflict with each other and will actually cancel out the protection. SO just download one.
Running Spybot Search & Destroy with EITHER Avast or Avg (great Free virus protection programs ) will keep a computer in good working condition. FREE
HERE ARE SOME LINKS, THAT WOULD BE BETTER: Avira AntiVir http://www.free-av.com/ NEW *****Somthing new FROM MICROSOFT.*** 2009 ---Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com
Try bootin to safe mode by pressing F8 on turning on the system then try to uninstall by going into the control panel [Programs(vista)/Add or Remove Programs(XP)]
By doing this you will be able to uninstall the AVG anti virus.
Then restart and the system will boot in normal mode then install Kaspersky. Never have 2 anti virus in a system. Just a word of caution.
Cheers !
you might not have uninstalled AVG .instead you could have deleted the AVG folder. AVg components are still there in the registry.if you didnt uninstall it ,install AVG once more and uninstall it manually. if its not working remove AVG components from registry here are the instrucions: To remove the AVG registry entries, open Registry Editor (Start->
Run-> Regedit). In the registry editor, navigate to the entries
mentioned below,
Right click on these entries and then delete them. If you are not
comfortable about deleting registry entries, you can use a free
registry cleaner. If you are using a 64 bit machine, then these are the
entries to be removed.
Once these entries are removed, Kaspersky installation will be
completed normally. Alternatively you can also use the AVG cleaner or
Kaspersky removal tool for AVG8.
Strippy had asked you a right question. You may be trying to install AVG when you have already one antivirus program running. OR you had once installed AVG sometimes in the past, but uninstallation was not properly done. Hence it is showing registry key error.
1. If you are running any anitvirus prog now, first uninstall it. Then restart the machine.
2. Now you try install AVG. it should install. if not, try the following
Go to system restore and create restore point for safety.
go to run and type regedit and then enter
Press cntrl + F for finding earlier registry keys of AVG. Try to find out all old registry keys amd delete them all.
I have had AVG for a long time and it beats any antivirus i have ever had. but if you really want to remove it, use the add/remove programs, or go to the star menu, programs, AVG folder and select the UN-installer. once removed, then try again to install the new one. Make sure to select ( remove Virus Vault ) in the option when un-installing AVG.
If your still getting issues, go into C: and delete any remaing AVG system folders that may be left behind.
