No power output from a generac c5000 generator

I'm a seasoned veteran with automotive electronics but am afraid I lack the knowledge to effectively troubleshoot a no power problem on my old portable generator. Any tips would be appreciated

I have a Generac model 09856-0 that runs fine but has no current output. The brushes appear to be almost new. I checked for burnt wires on the armature, and cleaned the brush rings w/ 400 grit sandpaper. Re-assembled the whole thing no change. Also tried to excite the field w/12v d.c., it didn't help. I did desolder two of the diodes to check them. Hope they were put back in the right direction. I guess what I'm looking for is a step by step troubleshooting guide for portable generators in general. I also have a smaller Honda with a similar problem.

This gen-set may have lost its magnetism, to restore it, get a plug in drill, plug it into the generator, start the gen, pull the trigger on the drill and turn the chuck back and forth as fast as you can a few times, please wear gloves, wait a little and try it again, if it starts to work,, problem solved, maybe, so shut it off and try it again, if it works without the drill being spun, great, if you have to do the drill again to get it going, you have other problems, a Generac I have has a little electronic device that goes out, it was cheap, but I am pulling my hair to remember what it was called,, . when it was out I had to use the drill every time to get it going, not fun!

Refit the brush pack, check the exite cct resistance throught wiring down through the brushes and back from a connector further up the loom preferrably righ up at the control section.
Gernally this should be under 100 ohms.
Previously I have reduced from 260ohms  to  75Ohms  and this was enough to move the machine from totally dead to working to spec.  Steve

First check the circuit breakers on the control/outlet panel.
Then take the end off the generator and look at the brushes (usually what breaks) and the 2 slip rings they ride on (these get dirty and have to be cleaned off with a bit of emery cloth)
Then look at the voltage regulator (the little board that the brushes plug into)

Let me know if you need more detailed help,
Carl

Generator runs,no power at breakers or output plug, has been started and shutdown under load. 5.7 volts on wires coming from stator. All three wires.this is on a motor home.

have the unit checked by an authorized generator repair shop
if it was operating when shore power came back on there is every possibility that the generator or inverter has been damaged from the lack of synchronization of the sine wave

Why isn't it producing rated output?

Rated output is at full load. Units will produce power up to that limit and use gas accordingly. Very lite load = less output and less gas consumption, etc.

Where is compression release

If you can get it running, run some "Sea Foam" cleaner through it. Sounds like the valves (reed) are gummed up... I don't think there is a compression release on this machine, but you can get the manural at: Generac Power Systems The best backup generator for your home business...

My generac rv generator runs bu no voltage output.

Try putting 12 volts across the commutator at the brushes. Ust a low current battery nor a car storage battery.

Installed a generac 20kw about a year ago, ran fine untill 2 days ago. During a utility outage, generator ran for about 30 minutes and then stopped producing power while still running. All mains were still...

With the engine off, check the exciter brushes and slip rings which supply magnetic power for the alternator winding in the stator. Also, check the motor-to-alternator mechanical coupling. Check the breakers for tripping. To service beyond this point requires a schematic of the alternator, a voltmeter, plus knowledge of what the schematic is telling you. Good luck!
