Plays cds but wont read dvds

I was copying a VHS tape to DVD and the player suddenly stoped working. Ever since that the VHS works just fine, it will still play CDs, but it will not read DVDs. When a disc is inserted, it says "Reading" for quite a while, then ejects the disc and says "Unknown disc, check disc again". It does this with both purchased DVDs and DVDs that I had previously burnt on the same player. I thought this was odd because it still plays CDs, which leads me to believe it is not a problem with the lens. I have not tried to resolve the problem in any way other than using compressed air to try and blow off the lens, which made no difference. Please help.

The answers given say download Firmware updates, but I cannot find them!!

Everywhere I go it offers the same solution, but when I type in Firmware

updates, all I get is for PC, not my VCR/ DVD combo. How do I actually get to the Firmware update and download?

I have the same issues as Atom's. I had put a DVD-RW into the recorder. It prompt me to initialize. I selected the VR mode and it went through the process of initializing. Upon completion, I could not get any respond from the remote, so I ejected the DVD-RW. After this, I put it back into the recorder but is kept saying "unknow disc". I tried every DVD I have but wouldn't work. It would only play CDs. I reset the system but it still would not work.

Can I transfer video tapes onto CD's

A lot depends on what type of video tape you use and where do you want to play the DVDs (CDs are for audio recording only). If tape is compact VHS then you can buy a simple DVD Recorder VHS VCR combo player and transfer across easily provided you have the compact VHS cassette module.

For other type of video camera tapes you will have to try other methods like connect camera with tape to a DVD recorder and directly burn the DVDs. You can buy attachments and software for PC but I have found these very cumbersome to work with.

My JVC DR-MV150B plays prerecorded VHS tapes fine.

Try opening the front hatch of the tape by pressing the small, square button on the right or left (short) side of the tape. Check the black tape inside for any marks, dirt, scratches, tears, etc. If the tape is fine then your unit needs to be cleaned with a tape cleaner available at any electronics specialty or retail store. Good luck to you!

I've purchased a philips dvd videoplayer, dvp3350v/05, with the aim of being able to copy from video to dvd...having read the manual though, it reads like the only copying it will do is from dvd to...

The DVP3350V/05 is a DVD player / Video recorder combi, so will only play DVDs, not record on to them.

You will need a Philips DVDR3510V or DVDR3512V, to record from VHS to DVD.

www.cheapestelectrical.co.uk should have them in stock, if not contact them for availability.

Also, most pre-recorded VHS tapes are copy protected, so you may experience picture rolling and colour fading in & out on any copies you make.
Any VHS tapes you have recorded yourself will not have this copy protection, and will copy ok.

I have recorded all my vhs tapes to dvds and they have played before and now they wont play. i have checked 4 dvds and they wont read in my tv, or 2 of my computers. what could of happened?

It can be several things. What type of DVD's do you have and how old are your players. Most older DVD players won't play the DVD+R format. When you said they played before was that in the recorder you used to make them? If so then most likely you failed to fina'ize them in the DVD recorder you used to make them. If you don't do that, they will ONLY play in the DVD recorder you used to copy them. If you did finalize them, it may be that, as said before, cheap discs dont work in any machines and DVD+R wont work in older players.
