My DSP-A1 is powered off when I put the volume up (between 1/4 and 1/2) after many years, having the same configuration, including wires, speakers and units attached.
Configuration: B&W Front, effect and center speakers (large). Niles as rear speakers. I have attached: DVD Audio unit, CDRW recorder, LD/DVD Player, MD Player, Phono turnover, VCR, TIVO, DIRECTV. All wires are MONSTER CABLES.
The A1 has an internal self diagnostic program which you can go through to find the fault. You can access the diagnostic program by simultaneously pushing some buttons on the front panel. The Yamaha service manual for the A1 tells how to do it and what the diagnostic codes mean. You can get a copy of the service manual on the web from several suppliers for a small fee.

Popped power supply hi sorry if you can't get it on trying to do a diagnostic won't matter if you can open the back check where the power is going into you will c a power supply board a cap has carrots on it check if any of them is popped up
Either the power switch is shorting out, or you could have a faulty or somewhat faulty resistor or capacitor on the power board. You can test them with an anlalog meter. Each component has an imprinted number on it to determine it voltage and ohm rating. That number should match the number on your tester. Some units also have relays in them. The little square plastic boxes. You can test these with an ohmmeter but you would likely have to pull the circuit board to test the relay from the solder joints on the bottom.
to get to the diagnostic menu on the machine press power button set menu + button and next key all at the same time which will take you to the diagnostic menu

The display problem is because the solderings on the back of the display are broken. To fix it you have to open the amp and redo the solderings (there are about 50 or 60 of them). There is a Youtube video that shows how to do it. I have fixed this on my DSP-A1. I also have the problem with the motorized volume control. I have tried cleaning it, and it works for a few days, then it's stuck again. I guess I will have to replace it to have it fixed permanently. The part number is VZ621400, a new one costs about 40$.
