I wanted to transfer the videos i had to a disk but when i went to do so they were gone. I don't know how it even happened. And my heart is broken cause its of my daughter who is now 15 months old that i had on there from when she was born. Any thoughts or help would be great. like maybe they are still retrievable somewhere on the hardware in the camcorder?
If your camera has a memory card or hard drive stop using it immediately so as to not record anything on it over any other recording. There is software out there that can recover erased material if nothing has been recorded over it such as other pictures , videos. You install the hard drive or memory card into a compute with the software and if you are fortunate you may be able to get it back.

Do both cameras have a dv connection to them?

You need a cable and some video capturing software. If you have a DV port you need a firewire cable. Pinnacle Studio makes a good program that is reasonably priced, easy to use, and makes professional videos.

How it's supposed to work is to get a program that recognizes the camera, then the tape can be captures. Windows Movie Maker never supported it. In fact Microsoft doesn't even support it anymore. They have recommended using Pinncale Studio to work with DV cameras.
Once you install Studio, put the tape in, turn the camera on, Studio will load up.
