Agitator slipping When washing, agitator turns, but seems to slip at times not fully agitating the clothes. I can push down on the agitator, and it seems to take hold and agitate for a second, then begins to skip.

That is due to overloading most likely. they do have a clutch that will slip to prevent the motor from burning up. If you add too many items, it will load down the agitator. this is usually normal operation. If you are sure that it is slipping more than normal, the clutch mechanism might be failing.
no it is not suppose to slip it sounds like the agitator dogs need replacing it is quiet easy to repair and not expensive it only cost me $8 and took twenty minutes to do when I replaced the ones on my washer
There are a set of "teeth" in these agitators that where out. Pull the fabric softener dispenser off. Remove the screw holding the agitator in place and pull it up and out of the tub. Then you'll have to separate the agitator, just pull really hard, using a forked object like a tree (seriously). Then you will see the dog ears 4 of them get replacement parts install in reverse. It will work great, like new.
am I to believe that this is a agitator that sits on top of a spindle if so then try and move it by hand as some times the worm and gear cog in the gearbox become sheared or the drive belt is worn and slip easily not giving the power to the agitator I hope that's a start to go on eric
2 things First is that I assume this not to be a 1 piece agitator. If it was the whole thing should turn back n forth Make sure its top (nut) fastner is tight. Usually just push down slightly and turn Clockwise.
A sectioned agitator has a lower section separate fro the upper. The lower can be attached to the agitator shaft and will move back n forth but the top has teeth that engage 1 way and allow slippage when the agitator comes back the other way. This "ratchet" action (some whirlpool older models that i have seen) if it has teeth ground off or grease build up under the teeth can cause them to stop agitating and just kind of sit there.
Drain and remove the clothes, Take the top by hand and try turn it back n forth see if bottom moves. If the top is slipping and the bottom stays put remove the top nut (turn Counter Clock Wise) and try remove the upper section. If you can get it off you may be able to see why its not turning, and get the part to fix it.
Please let me know if this helped you. Rate me with as high a mark as you can. thanks and good luck.
is it a top load washer?if so there are 4 dog ears under the agitator cap that turn it ,you need to replace them($2 at your local appliance parts store-mike
You need to purchase agitator dogs and install them in between the two parts of the agitator. They just pull apart. Turn the top part upside down and look down in there. You will see some small, fish shaped plastic things, remove them. & replace with new.
most likely the agitator dogs are bad. if the agitator engages clockwise and free spins counter clockwise they are good, if it slips they are bad. remove the bolt in the center of the agitator, take off cap or dispenser and remove the inner cap first. pull out the agitator, put on the floor, stand on the base of the agitator and pull up on the upper part to separate, take out the dog holder and replace dogs. Most appliance repair shops should have part on hand for about 5-6 dollars. part number 80040-fsp.
there is slipping in the transmission. older machines used a pair of electrical solenoids to shift between spin and agitate. newer machines use the motor direction to engage the transmission for agitate and reverses for empty and spin.
