Is it possible to make the printer print a test print or diagnostics page by pressing buttons? I.e., all by itself without a printer driver application on the PC?
My problem is that I run the printer under linux with CUPS, hpijs, hplip. All worked great until I upgraded lots of packages on the debian installation. For several weeks I could not print, until I figured out how the udev rules file changed format with the new udev version, and so on.
Now one of the printers (two are hooked up) pretty much prints as before, but not the 1020. It does feed a sheet of paper, but nothing is printed.
I noticed a little smoke coming out of the paper output opening before the first sheet after several weeks came out. Could that mean that the printer is actually broken?
All other printers I've used in the past many years all had a way of printing a test sheet autonomously. Some printers had a special button. Most other printers had a special startup sequence. Press and hold button X while turning power on, something like that. The user manual of this printer only mentions clicking a button in the Windows printer driver, which I don't use because of linux. I remember having had trouble of installing the windows printer driver under WinXP.
Anyway, perhaps there still is a way to get a test print without printer driver, just to verify that the problem is in the printer and not in the linux software.
Thanks for your answer.
Linux should have a big HP "driver cnetral" program. I have ubuntu, and Mandriva and they have it
anyhoot, i know there is a way to test print, but I'm not at the shop. Email me @ [email protected] and I'll send it to you that way!

Hello, The HP 1020 Does not print a configuration page like most printers can.
There is no button to press on the printer at all to do this.
If you are looking for the page count on the printer. In the printer driver, under the properties, you should find it on the about tab, or click on any HP LOGO you see in the driver.
Not the best news, but I hope this has helped.
The Fixya Team...
press and hold the green button for 5 seconds to generate an internal test print... does it print? If it does its a driver issue... if it dosent check your toner ctg remove and reinstall
If you are getting correct test page without errors, simply unplug your printer's USB Connection from PC. uninstall Printer drivers and software. restart PC.. Re-Install New Copy of Drivers and Software.. THEN PLUG THE PRINTER USB CABLE TO PC.. try printing after proper driver is installed..
Hello, the more certain is that this bad since the cartridge, remove to accommodate it again, if you want to be tested for direct printing of the printer opens and closes the cover 3 times, then she will try to print a test page.
If it does then verifies that the lid has a plastic tooth that goes to the printer, press the button when you close the lid, check that this function is working
try uninstalling the driver and installing it again.
