Hi,
this feature's name is "substitution". You can do this if your pbx is Omnipcx Enterprise.
Usage:
1. Dial the code of the feature "substitution"
2. Dial the extension number which you want to substitute
3. Dial the four digits secret code of this extension. (default=0000)
If this was successful you would get a dial tone which was the same as the remote extension did off hook and could make call.

I have had this trouble too, and the answer is remarkably simple - with the handset DOWN, press the [i] button to access the menu. It sounds like the error you had was from doing it with the handset off the hook. Hope this helps.
