Have to do the key sequence fairly quickly or it defaults back to the "COVER IS OPEN" message.
1. Open the front door to access the toner
2. Press the "Clear" button.
3. Press the "Start" button.
(When you press START the screen should clear.)
4. Press the "?" or "Down Arrow" button.
5. Press the "?" or "Up Arrow" button.
(When you press the down arrow an 'E0? should appear, which will change to '00? when you press the up arrow)
6. Press the "OK" button.
(When it say s 'ACCEPTED')
7. Close the front door.

SOURCE: how to get ride of Toner life end message

You could try resetting the toner cartridge settings. OPen the machines front door where you would replace the cartridges. On the top panel you will see a "clear/back" button. Press it and on the display you will see a reset menu come up. Arrow to each one and hit the OK button. Press "1" to reset. Once you have gone through all close the front door of the machine and press stop to bring the display back to normal.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Brother 4070 Printer will not recognize new toner cartridge

Hi

Just cover the eyes (on both sides) that you can see in the bottom of the machine after removing the imaging cartrige with a small piece of electrical tape.

With printer switched on push the switch which is located inside the upper left side of printer (it is a small white switch) and then release it.

Also try resetting the gear, take the cartridge out. On the gear side take off 2 screws, the black gear on top right side, with a small spring underneath. Just take it off and reset it (rotate clockwise) so it is not at the stopping point.

Please do accept this solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

SOURCE: Brother 5240 laser printer changed toner still wont work.

This works on several different Brother Printers to get rid of toner/drum empty errors:

1. Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps.
2. Turn the printer off.
3. Hold the 'go' button while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on.
4. Release the 'go' button.
5. Press the 'go' button 2 times.
6. Pause.
7. Press the 'go' button 5 times.
8. The toner light should be off.
9. The paper light should be on or flashing [doesn't happen on all].
10. Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.

BROTHER DCP7055 PRINTER SHOWS REPLACE TONER EROR

When replacing the toner cartridge, you MUST install a brand new, unused genuine Brother toner cartridge in order to reset the toner status. Swapping toner cartridges from one machine to another or installing a partially used toner cartridge may cause this problem. Brother machines control their image quality for the most suitable print quality by monitoring toner consumption. If you install a partially used toner cartridge, your Brother machine is unable to recognize toner consumption correctly which will cause this problem. Therefore, when you replace the toner cartridge, please use a brand new toner cartridge, not a partially used toner cartridge from another machine.

Brother Laser HL-5240 has a status light and toner light. Fuser was replaced but no help.

that error usually indicates that the toner has reached its end of life
or the drum is not properly installed.

i had one person who put the toner in but threw the drum cartridge away.

"drum near end". What is this? is it easy to fix? how do you fix?

There are two main parts in a laser printer: the toner cartridge and the image drum. Most people are familiar with the toner cartridge, but sometimes the drum is an unknown until you start seeing error messages or streaks and blotches begin appearing on the output.

In some printers, the drum is replaced along with the toner cartridge. But yours has a separate drum, and the printer is warning you it's nearing the end of its life. Replacements are available from a number of sources online, as well as at big-box office supply stores. Genuine Brother drum units will cost over $100, and after-market brands usually range from $50 to $75.

A typical vendor and price is here (I've never purchased from this place myself, and have just used it as an example):
