TV won't turn on

My TV won't power on either with the remote or with the manual power on. I hear a clicking noise and it appears that the TV is turning on and off. After several times it stops. Never actually see a picture.

I took it to a technician and he said the set has a bad transformer (high voltage) and that it would cost $200 to replace/repair. It's not worth it at that price. Any cheaper alternatives? It's a shame. I've had the TV a few years but haven't used it that much as it's in our basement. I'm contemplating reaching out to the manufacturer to complain.

I have a Sony Wega 24" tv....5 years old...excellent reception and picture..all of a sudden it won't turn on...red light blinks for awhile and then a click is heard and it apparently is turning itself off. I have been advised to dump it.....costs over $200 fix. "Starter box" or something like that shot. I cannot believe a set of that integrity would last only 5 years. Looking for an answer.

    HI,

I have the same problem with my Proscan PS36800HR and my repairman tells me he cannot get parts from RCA. What can we do?

    Thanks,

    Gilles.

Our Samsung 40-inch flatscreen HDTV, our one indulgence for entertainment purposes, has just gone loopy in the same manner y'all describe--Clicking like it's coming on, but just blinks the indicator light at us and nothing, then turns itself off. We opened it up last night to check for dustiness, but nothing. We're not sure what to do now and are very disappointed--we saved up to buy this thing one year ago this week.

My fiance is very handy with computers so we're hoping there's a fix we can try at home but not really sure where to begin assessing what we need.

My Supra TV won't turn on at all. I had it imported to England from Dubai. It worked fine for 2 weeks. Then I went to turn it on to connect the VBox (cable) and it will not turn on. I turned it 90 degrees when I moved it from one side to get a look at the back to draw a diagram to get the correct cable cord, but didn't do anything else. What happened? It's a 26 inch LCD Flat-Screen. Very nice piece so I don't want to/cant afford to buy another. Pls advise.

  • funkydoodle Feb 23, 2009

I have the same problem with my 20" inch tv. I have no idea what happened or if it's even the same problem; today I accidentally sat on the SATELLITE remote, and then the tv (which cannot be controlled itself with the satellite remote. Only the satellite box on TOP of it would ever be affected by me sitting on the satellite remote, and yet the satellite box still works fine) the television turned OFF! We have tried EVERYTHING to fix this, especially since it doesn't make sense that the tv turned off immediately when i sat on the Bell ExpressVu remote! My TV is a Toshiba, and we've had it for a couple of years, but I don't understand this! It's really upsetting me, actually!

And again, when i go to manually turn the TV on, it makes a clicking sound as if it were turning off and on, and yet nothing is showing up on the TV. Not even a flash or a light, just the clicking noise. And so far, it hasn't gone away like some of your other TVs have. What's up with that?!?! Can anyone help please?!

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2009

I have the same problem with my 42" Samsung, it takes 10 minutes to turn on. It makes a clicking noise and then a red light flashes 4 times, and it turns off without turning on, 1/99 times it actually turns on. Problem just started recently

Open it up and look at the capaciters near where the power plug attaches to the circuit board. If any of them have a bulgeing or pushed out top it needs to be replaced. get the numbers off the side and get new ones from radio shack, just a buck or two a piece. You'll need to solder to do this.

Capacitors in the power supply can cause this fault if you can replace them it may cure the problem. I had the same problem and changed it myself and i have never done this sort of thing before. The Capacitor cost only £2.10 in total and guess what? my TV's working!!!!!!!!

First thing to do is to test the flyback testing flyback has a service charge (P50) and if the flyback is o.k the problem of your unit is in the Horizontal output. i suggest to change it. a leaky H.transistor is a part which is located HV section wich let the unit turning on.

After about two years of continual stable use, I too developed the same problem. It occured after a lack of use for months, damp/dusty environment = clicking sound when trying to turn on tv. Repeated attempts to turn it on would eventually work. Fortunately in my case it developed over time and just got worse after each extended lack of use, until eventually it wouldn't turn on ever, it would only click. Using your information, I removed it from the damp environment, opened the back and used compresed air to clean the inside components. Initially no change in status. Repeated attempts to turn it on, however, did produce results. It is now day two and the problem is still there, although it is getting better. The longer it is on and more it is used the more stable it is becoming. I currently believe that one of the components collects moisture and the heat of use/attempted use, dries the area of the short. However, I also believe that the component retains more moisture than just in that area and that it is improving with more use due to a cumulative drying process.

You weren't listening to his question. He already was told by a technition that the set had a problem with the transformer. You simply reiterated what he already had been told. His question was whether anyone KNEW OF A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE solurtion. By the way my Tv has just begun having the same problem,. It must be a common fault. Typical Sony!!!

The noise is probably the power supply in hicup mode or safety mode, that's what happens when a fault develops in the set which loads the power supply down. All you have to do is get a multi meter and go round measuring things like Resistance to earth from collector of line out transistor this should be at least 10kohm , then measure the various diodes that can be found in the power supply... hope this helps.

"An idea from the origin of the problem" I have the same problem on a 25 inches T.V. What I remember before the problem began is that T.V. had a problem with the Sleep function, the problem was that once you had activated the sleep button, it was not possible to cancel the function until next time the T.V. was turned off and on again, but never with the ciclic function Sleep that normally gives you determinated options until it gets cancelated. With te time it got worst because if the button Sleep was pressed the function only was presenting the Red label that means that you only have a minute before i tuns off. My supposition is that the function sleep is having an effect of turning off the T.V. as soon as you tun it on. Now I am trying to contact a technician to fix the problem I hope he can cancel the Sleep function and fix it. I hope it helps.

This is the same problem i'm having so this is obviously not a solution but i didn't know how to ask what it would actually mean to get this high voltage section fixed and how much does something like that cost. is it possible to just buy parts and use common sense to fix or do u really have to take it into a shop... thanks

Unfortunately, this is not a solution. I bought the same set in Jan. of 04 and I have the same symptom that first occured on 11/18 in the morning. After numerous attemps to power on the set, it statrted working again. It worked for about a week with no other issues, until 11/24 when it started doing the same thing again. I unplugged set from the wall for 5 days, tried again and it worked fine for two hours. Then the screen went blank, audio OK. Turned set off and it hasn't worked since. :>( Is the set going to turn into a money sucking peice of electronics? I'd be interested to hear from mpbbuzz if he was able to get the set repaired.

Check it out ohms... my TV works fine other then the fact it won't come on. :-( About a month ago the ( POWER ) went out and turned it into a paper-weight. This 13'' GE product in question was hooked up to a three foot long six outlet power strip with a reset button, breaker switch the whole nine yards... Wounderful isn't it? WRONG Nevertheless in my never ending quest to be the first man on earth to fix something without using Duct tape. I simple unplugged it for a while. I plugged it back in and the remote wouldn't work. So I went off the deep end and pushed the POWER button with my thrimbling finger and to my dismay it came on. :-) FOR JOY! This was short lived, after about three week's it just got to the point it wouldn't come on at all. Can you tell me how to fix this? Or am I going to have to cut a bigger hole in the wall of the bedroom for my spare 36'' TV? The last time I did this my first wife kept gripping about the steem from the shower fogging up the screen... SOooo if we can't figger it out I guess I can take a shower in the front bathroom where there's no hot water?????????

I have had several TVs of various makes and models whose fault is that they try to turn on but can't.

I still have one in my closet from years ago! Now, my little GE portable has crapped out, too! We are not amused!

In my opinion, it is a fault that is purposely designed into the TVs by the manufacturers!

They know that the cost of repair is too prohibitive and most people will just junk their old TV for a new one.

I think it is dispicable! But, that's our consumer society for you.

I have the same issue with my emerson model 2704. While inspecting the circuit board i noted that the HV transformer was set incorrectly at the factory cracking the circuit board. A fix was applied using solder to close the broken ciruit and it had fell off. I resoldered the circuit and it works fine now.

I have the same problem with my TV. It's like it'll turn on but then it shuts off right away and I never see the picture. Sometimes if I manually press the power button over and over (I mean OVER and OVER) it'll turn on but the past couple days that hasn't worked. I think it's time to throw it out (I've had mine for quite a few years and it's more trouble than it's worth for a 13 inch TV).

I had the same issue with mine. It was the transistor, resistor and a cap located where the A/C input is on the board. The "power on" circuit I guess. Cost was about $110

I hear the fan almost non stop while the tv is on.

You have a bad color wheel. The color wheel is located in front of the lamp, as the light shines through it as it spins. It is made up of different colored segments of glass, and one of the segments has came loose and causing the vibrating humming noise. The reason I know it isn't a fan is because the fans will continue to run for about 30 seconds after the set is powered off. The click you hear is the relay cutting off the fans. The color wheel cuts off as soon as you press the power button to cut the set off. I've replaced many of these at our shop for the same problem.

TV won't stay turned on, no picture, started making high pitched noise

That high pitched noise you're hearing is the power supply telling you that it has too much of a load on it and lowered its operating frequency which in effect cuts its output way down! Normally you don't hear any thing since the power supply operates at a frequency that's beyond human hearing. In an RCA this indicates more than likely that your horizontal output transistor is shorted and this short was caused by the flyback transformer shorting. This is a common happening with RCA's You'd need to take to a tv shop and have it checked out. Stargazer
